you're talking about a guy that never played a rotation of more than 8 or 9 players when he coached the Rockets; and he didn't always have just Yao, T-Mac and scrubs. he'd still be playing Alston 40 mpg before giving either Brooks or Lowry decent minutes. you'd probably think that it was still a bunch of scrubs on the Rockets like most of the media do. he'd just dump the ball to Yao down low, or have the PG hand T-Mac the ball outside the three point line. i don't know what his offense would look like without T-Mac and/or Yao. wait, i do, and it was the ugliest thing i ever saw. heck, it was ugly even with them. only 4 players on the team scoring in a playoff game? you can say goodbye to the fast breaks, and the running style the Rockets play now. you can say goodbye to the movement with and without the ball and good open looks at the three (Alston, Artest, or Ariza open is not really a good look).
He always stuck up for the players and that's why I'll always respect him. I was horrified when they fired him but Rick is better. I think JVG would make a great GM someday, he fell in love with Chuck Hayes long before last years Pau domination when he went national.
Damnit I have to second that. Captain Grumpy knows his basketball. I only wish that the Rockets played on national television so he could comment on the amazing job the Rockets are doing right now.
I know I might get blasted for this but Jamal Crawford in Atlanta might give him a run for his money. Don't get me wrong, I love Landry and everything that he's done for us this season off the bench but a valid case can be made for Crawford. Where would the Hawks be without HIS scoring punch off the bench? Just my two cents. (I still think Landry deserves it at this point, in terms of what kind of team we have at the moment compared to Atlanta's)
while i agree with you on van gundy's limited offensive repertoire, rick is actually known for sticking to an 8 man rotation in his stint as the kings coach. he adapted since this team is deep and lacks star power. im sure JVG or any other nba coach would have as well (maybe not as successfully). but regarding the rest of your post...um fail? while JVG was the coach, yes he always did have just scrubs (offensively anyway) outside of tmac and yao. he NEVER had brooks, lowry, or landry, since they came after he was fired. lets see the who he did have after the 04-05 season: battier alston john lucas luther head juwan howard mutombo chuck hayes stromile swift (currently in china) an overweight bonzi (currently in china as well?) steve novak (rookie) vspan (never lasted in nba) kirk snyder (currently in jail) yea that's an offensive power house right there... anyway, i hated the offense under JVG as much as the next guy, but i doubt even rick could have done anything with the aforementioned group.
i was gonna say the exact same thing. i love landry as well but i'd say as of now, crawford is edging landray by a bit. noone thought the hawks would be doing this well either.
DISAGREE. Landry and Jamal are both averaging 16 ppg, Landry has a higher fg percentage, Landry has a higher FT percentage, Landry gets almost 6 rebounds a game while Jamal only gets 2, Jamal does get more assists, Landry averages almost a block a game, and Landry is playing 26 minutes a game while Jamal is playing 30mpg. Landry has a +17.79 efficiency, while Crawford has a +13.54 efficiency. Nobody ever thought the Rockets would do this well too. Landry to me has more of a chance at 6th man of the year than Jamal Crawford.
I think whomever finishes with the better record might get it and right now that lends itself to Crawford. Either guy is deserving of the award right now. Could we have co-players?
The thing about Landry is that he's not just putting up numbers. A lot of backups put up numbers. And if voters use ppg as a measuring stick, Landry's not going to stick out. The difference though, is that Landry is putting up numbers EFFICIENTLY. I used to dismiss the Amare comparison, but right now Landry's basically Amare-lite on offense. Absolute beast of a finisher who almost never misses.
I think JVG knows the national media is stuck on Lakers/Celtics/Magic/Cavs and everybody else is "who"... So it's good that he gives Houston some "love" since we don't seem to get anyway! Doesn't JVG and family still live in Houston?
DM as GM. Rick as Head Coach. JVG as President of Fan Club. Rox are just blessed. Lets get JVG back to be assistant coach. Still love those defense.
Are you talking about Coach JVG? He never had AB and Scolandry. And Landry was sent to D league by coach RA and morey only give him one year contract. It's not like they were the only genius and others are syupid.
(Shameless plug) All these points I bring up in my video: <object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IaUylc_m0KA&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IaUylc_m0KA&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>
those other commentator morons talking as if veragjo deserved 6th man over landry when he has no offensive game, to me he is a taller version of chuck hayes, only chuck isn't a flopper, maybe flopper of the year award he could win.
Crawford is probably the front-runner right now, because these type of awards tend to go to players on teams with lots of wins. And when a player is added to a team that has improved dramatically, he'll get even more attention. That's just how it is. Looking at the numbers, I think the Landry has a great case. Unlike Crawford, Landry is his team's goto player in the 4th quarter, and his boxscore stats are tops amongst reserves.
