    Helpful minutes

When the Raptors used 6-9 reserve Donyell Marshall at center Monday night, the Rockets adapted by also going small behind Yao Ming. Clarence Weatherspoon saw his first significant minutes in more than a month, playing in place of Dikembe Mutombo.

Weatherspoon played 15 minutes with three rebounds and three points.

"He's capable of better, but a lot of that is a function of not playing as much, too," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "If Clarence played every night, he could play just as effective as any other four we have."

Starting Weatherspoon would be nice. He could help down under with Yao.

Okay, I think the question here is obvious...

What's up with your thread title. It's a total misquote, because "just as effective" is much different than "more effective".

    Not that different.

The obvious question is...if he could be just as effective, why does he never play?

Well that answer is just as obvious. Because we aren't showcasing Spoon for a trade like the other two.

You're probably right...I'm just wondering if it would be better NOT to play the other two as every minute they play seems to diminish their trade value...

Spoon isn't bad, and he is a much better rebounder than Juwon and Mo. But he is too short at 4, giving too much on defensive end.

Do we need any more proof that JVG needs to be fired?

Too bad all our other PF's are not effective... This is not a very powerful statement made by JVG.

Not that different? Yeah right...everyone opening the thread is going to think that:
A: JVG just slammed his other players in public
B: JVG is an idiot because he doesn't play the guy who could be the best 4

When his actual quote is just standard coach blather, propping up players, and it could even be viewed as advertising for a trade.

Therefore, the obvious answer to the question you are trying to pose is: JVG doesn't play him more because he doesn't think that he would be more effective than the other PFs.

One day he goes to the media and complaints that everyone is arguing about the their minutes.

The next day the guy actually gives reason to more complaints.

Now that's a GREAT way to build chemistry.

Heck, I may have my share of complaints about JVG but I never questioned his intellect. Until now, that is.

    ]

What's the point of playing someone who isn't going to do any better? And especially if you want to get rid of the contracts of the other 2.

Also, it's possible JVG is just being nice to a guy who is keeping up a good attitude despite not getting minutes.

I am still confused about why the title is misleading - "MORE effective" is very different from "just as" effective.

If he was more effective than people can say - WHY doesn't JVG play him since he is the better player

if the quote is "just as effective" then its purely a coaches decision and if one is just as good as the other - why debate it

    Exactly.

We're making too much of this quote. JVG is just complimenting one of his role players; something, ironically, that people bash him for never doing. He's saying something positive, and we're quick to turn that into a negative.
