At the time Parker was just a 9pt scorer shooting 42%. Lots of coach yelling later he was up to 55% and 19pt's per game. Don't underestimate the power of coach calling you out. It's up to the coach as to when and where to apply the pressure. Since Vspan (like Yao) has some of the hopes of his countrymen on his back it's likely he will respond positively to a verbal coach. JVG is clearly adept at constructively pointing out errors. Lots of JVG haters here and generally with nothing but emotional reasons.
well im not sure what you see is really there. vspan also looks like a trainyard hobo that just woke up...but he isnt
Yeah, but Pop played Parker tons -- made him a starter, in fact, while still a rookie. I can take a lot of yelling from a coach if I know that the coach likes me enough to start me. On the other hand, VSpan has to know that JVG did his level best to discourage the Rockets from signing him. He has probably been getting a lot of unwelcome vibes from JVG -- until recently anyway.
Steve Nash played 65 games, averaging 10 minutes per game as a rookie. Sure sounds like his lack of PT as a rookie hurt his development.
I think that V-Span is a combination of Nash & Parker....Steve is a good passer....Parker is a good driver.... Billy is both..... His shooting......Not so much. But the Nash comparison to his rookie year is a bit much as V-Span has been a pro player for years, and Nash was coming from a VERY small college. At least Popovich had the balls to insert Parker into the starting lineup...I really want to see Billy play with Yao and Battier and TMac and Hayes....that is ONE smart team. DD
If he is so smart then why does he turn the ball over so much? Because his passes are too smart? Oh, wait, that's right, he's european therefore he is automatically smart.
Cause he is still adjusting to the american game. He had one bad game, Sam....ONE......Yao has had several games where he had a lot of turnovers, as had Tmac. Billy had ONE....and, it was when the team was up 30......He got a little wild when they were up 30...SOOOOOOO WHHHHHAAAATTTT !!!!! They were up 30...that is the EXACT time to get a little wild and have some fun. DD
He was pathetic against the Grizzlies also. But I agree with you that the team was up 30 so no harm was done. But the attention he gets from JVG shows me coach believes he can be a good player.
I have a question concerning last night's game: I did not see the game, but according to the stats Billy scored 13 points. And he made his first TO after he had already scored 10 points in the last quarter, when we were up by 30. So why is everybody claiming he had a bad game yesterday??? Concerning his shooting: In Europe his threes had a percentage of about 32%. Up to now he has 28% and I am sure that within this season he will improve a lot. So why so disappointed? We did not give him a contract because we were looking for a second Stojakovic but for a good perimeter defender, how can drive, gets charges, opens opportunities for Yao and TMac. So, in my eyes, he is doing quite well so far...
So Sam, Should JVG be mad at Yao tonight for his SEVEN turnovers? Or how about Tmac and his 5? At least Billy makes his on nights when the team is up 30. Now that is smart ! DD
you guys should just be happy that v-span is even getting playing time, because if kirk snyder was healthy right now, v-span would be averageing about 0.01 minutes per game.
probably but really, I was surprised last night that he showed up at the court....big ups to JVG...I thought he is going to put him into the doghouse Baklava still plays very careful, he is not himself....I do not like him at the 2 at all...I wish I could see him for 15-20 min playing the pg with Yao, Mac, Battier and Hayes
I beg to differ here to some other forumers... The guy's still learning--I think making mistakes and missing shots is normal for a rookie moreso for one who comes from a different game style and culture as well. The pressure on him doesn't help too, it's hard to play knowing that a missed shot or a turnover will send you to the bench... I also believe it's a good thing that he played today though...
I answered your question, I said he is still adjusting to the NBA game, speed, referees, expectations etc. And he only averages 1.10 turnovers per game, and about the same turnover rate as Yao and Tmac....so what is your point again? Also, read the V-Span blog, he mentions the big turnovers and how he was just having fun and trying to give the crowd a show because the team was up 30 points. He is right on the money.... DD
JVG is just not a good coach for young guys. He doesn't allow them to make any mistakes, so they play in fear instead of playing their game.
