JVG was one of the early adopters (if not the pioneer) that offensive rebounds were over-valued -- something that Popovich proved. From his Rockets-era to now, the league average ORB% has dropped from 29 to 22. Spurs ORB% in their 2007 title was 24.2 and the Lakers this year is 24.5. Spurs were 27th in the league then; Lakers are 4th with that number, now. See the trend? Popovich's transformation of ORB% v DRB% from 2004 to 2014 is very telling. They start Top 10 in both, but ORB% dropped fast. They were actually #1 in DRB% and #30 in ORB% in 2009. That's not by chance or lack of ability or effort. That's by design. And that's not about who's 1 and who's 30, it's about a strong rebounding team being ahead of the trend.
It's crazy how some people are speaking as though a commentator is the only occupation in which you have to watch all these games... Trust me, a sitting NBA head coach has to watch and analyse just as many games, if not more, than a media personality.
He sucked at making adjustments. He was good at stressing fundamentals, his teams defended and played hard...
Mike didn't have one either though. He had a system, once it was in place there wasn't any in game adjustments. JVG can just tell Rockets to do more of the same and they at least won't get worse on offense.
I don’t remember the JVG era with much clarity. I was in high school. I’ll take your word for it. I don’t see how he would be bad at it today though. When you listen to the guy, he has ideas about changing and adjusting everything, even the most mundane things. Don’t you think he could have grown as a coach? Why do we have to assume we are getting the same coach?
He is very smart and articulate and knows basketball very well... but with the Rockets his adjustments were rare and not terribly well effective.
His mindset may have changes after 10 years working in TV. Houston needs 1 more strong power forward, if they want to get champion like Cousins or K love
Change philosophy? Sure Change the ability to make adjustments? Not so sure. Possibly but I think it would be a mistake to assume so...
But he also had to work around having Yao. I loved Yao, but having a guy that size and with that lack of mobility kind of dictates your game plan to a large extent.
JVG coached the Knicks in the late 90s who were the slowest team in the nba. He came back about a decade later to coach the Rockets, who were the slowest in the NBA. The Rockets were grinding games out while other teams were pushing pace. JVG is the worst possible coach for this roster
