If someone could please summarize, I'd be thankful. I moved to Austin a couple of months ago.

    talks about battier...bla bla,

    kirk snyder..

has to prove him self, play for next years contract

he said kirk was not in good shape when he came 3 weeks ago

he will give us size and strenght at the two

    wesley and luther were undersized!

kirk has a good oppportunity to prove him self...

we still need size....we are a small team, need shooting at the 4

nothing will happen before the training camp

he watched china against usa, said it was not intersting, wached only 3 quarters...game sucked ass

hopes we can get people into the arena

    thats it!

    peace

What he said of significance about Battier is that he has watched 5 hours of Memphis tape on him and he is strong enough to play the 4. He can play defense and box out bigs stopping them from getting rebounds even if he doesn't get them. He does however see times when he would prefer him guarding say a Carmelo. Whatever the position "he needs to be on the floor with Tmac". And just reading between the lines it sounds like alot of that will be at the 4.

He also eventually wanting 4 3point shooters on the floor with Yao. He says Dallas already does that and it just spreads the floor and makes it difficult to double the post. Sounds like finally catching on but he should have watched some old Rockets footage along time ago.

    1. On 50 tix givaway: players complain to JVG that homecourt wasn't really a homecourt advantage so he did the tickets thing. Lower bowl is really expensive so some real fans who can't afford those seats will have the opportunity to make some noise closer to court. Basically, many rich people arn't loud fans. Toyota center has lots to do besides watching the game, could be a good thing, but it's a bad thing if your team is suck.

    2. On battier trade: On draft day, at 8, CD, DM, JVG felt there were no more star players, and . they didn't want Rudy Gay. They wanted Tago F.? (notsure what they said) but he went to ChiBulls. They liked battier because he's an effective 2 3 and 4, efficient shooter, big players in a variety of ways.

    3. On the team: Unproven at back up spots: backup PG, PF. The team will need the 6-7 unproven young players to emerge as good players.

    4. What needs work: We dont shoot the ball well enough. Still need to find players who can stretch the defense as to give the best players more room to drive/post.

    5. On battier playing the 3 which its Mcgrady's general pos.: JVG says he's not sure yet on how he will set groups. Ideally Mcgrady and Battier can play on the floor at the same time either at 2, 3 or 3,4. JVG has been watching battier on a 5 hr tape, mostly at the 4. JVG says battier won't be overwhelmed at the 4, can block-out, block shots, and can match up against players like Carmelo A.

    6. Ultimately JVG wants to stretch the floor without giving up size. He wants a 4 who can shoot 3 PT shooters on the floor. Says Dallas has 4 4 PT shooters without giving up size. They should be able to post of smalls too. Wants to put more pressure on opposing defenses.

    7. On Kirk Snyder: Had good numbers in NO, athletic, but in 2 yrs he has been traded twice, givin away by the hornets. JVG says this is a hard business. He is comming to houston with one yr left on his contract with an option. If he wants to profit in the NBA, he has to get it done this year. There can be no other possiblity than here, right now. Luther is the only other 2 guard. And with only 1 proven guard (Rafer), there is a lot of opportunity for Snyder to get more out of his career. The more you put into it, the more u can get out of your career. Snyder came into toyoCenter about 3 weeks ago to train, working out. He wasn't in good shape at first but he's working real hard. He needs to work on better shooting from distance. He gives a lot of size and strenght at the 2. Wesley was undersized. He has skill level but needs to grow bball IQ wise, stay focused, in shape for 12 months. finally he said, "NO BETTER OPPORTUNITY THAN RIGHT HERE IN HIS CAREER." (Is this a challenge? )

    8. On the PF pos.: Not much power in the PF spot. Only 2 players with size on roster: Yao and Mutombo. Concerned even if Mutombo gets injured. Wants to add a 4/5 player who can play between positions. Wants to add more shooting at the 4 spot as stated earlier. but, "we're not going to do anything before training camp."

    9. Last thoughts on Team USA: Watched usa vs china's first 3 QT but thought it was Battier play Yao. Jerry and coach K did a good job at picking . Players in the NBA are similar skill wise but very different in commmitment. Team USA games are so dominating that they bore him.

It was a good interview. On Battier, my impression was JVG wants to play him at PF. He didn't just blurt it out and say that but he said enough. But when the other team's best player is someone like Carmelo, Shane will move to SF and guard him.

He wants a 4/5 man? Badiane is perfect for that job.

What's the deal with Azubuike's contract?

He didn't say anything about Sura? It should be a norm to have a question on Bob Sura.

Didn't say anything about either even when he was talking about our guards.

Did he say Snyder was at TC working out with the rest of the boyz? Or did he just come in, work out once, and leave? If he is down there busting tail with the rest of the guys, then he's got a chance. If he's out horsing around, then I don't like his chances under JVG.

Snyder moved to Houston 3 weeks ago not in good shape. He's just about getting to where he needs to be shapewise and can now focus on improving his game. Said he needs to learn being a successful NBA player is a 12 month job. Without saying this verbatim, JVG said the starting SG spot is Snyder's if he wants it bad enough because Luther is his only competition. Today, as in several interviews since we got Snyder, JVG said the SG spot is "wide open" for him.

Maybe I'm reading to much into his offseason words, but I think JVG wants this to be our starting lineup the majority of the time:
    PG: Rafer
    SG: Snyder
    SF: Tracy
    SG: Battier
    C: Yao

Certain matchups will dictate other lineups.

JVG wants speed, athleticism, defensive intensity and 3 point shooting out of every player surrounding Tracy and Yao. It took me for a loop when he said we should have four 3pt shooters on the floor at the same time. He even said we could add another outside shooting PF.

A 3 PT shooting PG is just as important, if not more, than a 3 PT shooting PF.

I like the idea of Badiane as a 4/5. Why not let him learn from Deke while Deke is still on the team??

All in all, I am tired of JVG's negativity and dour demeanor.

Bring on Coach K - the next coach for the Houston Rockets!

Did you listen to the interview? Nothing about it was negative our dour. He is just plainly stating the facts about what he wants in his players on this team. Its a funny thing how all the coaches who are hated by the media and happy go lucky fans are the ones who usually win and thaat all the players are more then willing to go to war for. Pat Riley, Bill Parcels, Vince Lombardi....just to name a few.

Come on. The media in this town couldn't be more in Mister Van Gundy's lap if he paid them. Barry Warner is about the only one who goes against what is seemingly a company line.

What does JVG have in common with any of those guys? Oh right, Riles, whom he's really p'od with. You really should have thrown in Auerbach, Wooden, and PJ to come up with some real juice.
