I'm not so sure RT couldn't have upped the defense with Cato at 4 and JJ at the 3. Why does it have to be credited to JVG?

Since many have the different opinion on whether the Rockets have improved from last year under JVG, can someone post the team's record this time last year, the players talent level, and the specific aspects of the game, e.g., assists, scoring, percentage, rebounding, opponent field & shooting percentage, etc.

No, JVG can coach, it's Don Chaney who can dream but can't coach

JVG is not the reason this team is not doing better. The problem is YAO. This team's future is heavily dependent upon the progress and development of Yao. The better Yao gets, the better our team gets. JVG's doing all the right things w/ respect to urging Yao alone. Don't forget too that a lot of JVG's "realism" is really just rhetoric to get the players to be self-motiveted... and you know what?

it's working! Just look at a sampling of the quotes of Rox players after games. It's always about getting better and getting more consistent.

Insofar as why the Rox haven't been more consistent to date, well, that much is addressed in many threads, but the problem is NOT JVG's coaching.

    :D

People come on, we had the same problems we had last year, it is the players, we just need a trade.

great post... sparking intelligent, worthwhile discussion. we have slammed all our players who certainly deserve part of the blame, but i think it's time to questions VG and his methods as well. we have a decent record, but are just as frustrating as last year IMO because we are still underachieving and our two best players have regressed.

Don't think that Les has not noticed this...if we continue on this path, I'm sure VG will find himself on the hot seat or quit on his own. His mindset is too simplistic for our personnel. Our two best players are among the most unorthodox in the league....a driving shoot first PG and a perimeter oriented center...play to their strengths!!

I knew it was just a matter of time until Freak popped in with his indirect,sour-puss Rudys gone comment.

If any aspect of the team can be changed by the coach it seems like defense would be the most 'moldable'.
You can tell players how you want them to rotate, how you want the to zone, how you want them to match up.
You cannot tell players to make their shots. They decide that themselves.

I think Yao fits best in a half court offense built on passing. I don't think it's the Kings offense but I think some variation of that would work well with Yao. However, does it really matter what gameplan another team uses for Yao? Once the Rockets trade Yao, it should not be of any concern anymore. I think the Spurs would trade Rasho Nestorovic, Bruce Bowen, and draft picks for Yao.

Nope. Haven't you seen 'Hoosiers'? "You must pass the ball 4 times before every shot!" That is a variation on what Gundy does.

People critizied Rudy for his inability to change his players (He's good at changing himself). Now JVG sucks because he insists his own game plan?

I don't think JVG just came to town and told the Rockets the same stuff he told his Knicks players 5 years ago.
