The thing that bothers me most about JVG is that he loves Juwan Howard's professionalism and effort and he ignores the fact that Howard isn't really helping the Rockets cause with his missed perimeter jumpers, missed layups, and his measley 5 boards a game. But I do understand the Rockets had to take some of Orlando's junk to get McGrady, so I still give JVG a pass, and will judge him on the role players he finds in the future to surround Yao and McGrady with.
jvg is good coach and i think he can turn this team around once tmac gets back....this article might u give u more hope...good article about jvg http://www.nba.com/coachfile/jeff_van_gundy/index.html?nav=page
this thread is crap, you can't say a coach with 3-11 is an genius, you can't believe in something is nonexistance in the moment. Even without TMAC, this team are not filled up with nonames.
Without Kobe, I believe the Lakers would still manage to look like a professional basketball team, and win a share of games proportional to their talent.
so jvg must of been a idiot last last year and a poor defensive coach when he brought us back from a 6-11 start to win 51 games last year with less talent then this year...
ok not a idiot but a bad coach...he shouldnt be judged yet though in only 14 games into the season without our star player a couple of key role players in alston n sura
JVG is a good coach with some limitations. His limitations are being exposed with the outing of T-Mac. The over reliance on individual ability and lack of make up plan are hurting this team. Not only they are losing, but also playing disjointed offense with many glitches. I can accept losing with insuffienct talent, but not with lack of guidance.
Surely we can all wait to judge his coaching abilities UNTIL THE STAR OF THE TEAM comes back and plays a few games while healthy. IF we continue to lose... then i guess you may all have a point to argue. But until then, its all just dribble to me.
Anybody who wants JVG gone is not objective. 1. Wesley has lost quickness and his defense has slipped with his shooting. 2. Barry is a year older and never has been a creator. He gets his off wide open looks, and he is not a good defender. 3. Mutombo is not bringing near the energy and defense he brought last season- age and familiarity catching up with him. 4. Head is a rookie- A surprise, some good, some great, some big mistakes. 5. Swift has not got it yet. JVG is working on him but he will either be slightly average (like he has been so far in his career) or slightly above average, right now he is below, but I will give him 'til the all star break to change. 6. J. Howard has not consistently hit his shot and he has missed most layups he is not playing as well as last season. 7. Yao- about the same as last season so far, look at the numbers. 8. Ryan Bowan- still going (energizer bunny) 9. Derek Anderson- role player who gives about what I expected, some lift off the bench- not a difference maker. 10. Moochie- has done some nice work, as good as Rafer so far. 11. Rafer- injured but shooting poorly, not much more than a bench player. 12. TMac- The one who carries the team. The one. The difference. The best defender, the best scorer, the clutch player. Without TMac this team is Yao only. And Yao has some weaknesses that take away from his strengths. This team does not have defenders at the guard positions. This team is a very poor rebounding team. This team does not have a good scorer off the bench. When the closest thing you have to a scorer is DA you have a weak offensive bench. Barry can score when the chemistry is right, but when chemistry is wrong he can't create his shot. None of our guards can drive the basket (accept Head and he is not a finisher yet) TMac is this team. I don't expect them to improve much over last season unless Yao takes a giant step rebounding and scoring. If Yao plays like he did in the 4th qtr. of the Chicago game more consistently then he will become that 22 pt. 10 reb. player we need. This team did the best it could bringing in Swift and DA. Until we draft another scorer and improve our rebounding and pick and roll defense- and most importantly penetration defense... we will rely on Superman... McGrady. Don't fire JVG until we look at TMac's team and that record. If we get TMac back along with chemistry we will be a good team. Sura's injury hurt our rebounding and chemistry alot. TMac's injury exposed all of the above.
No, I would say the limits of Mr. Van Gundy's coaching abilities have been quite clearly exposed by his years as an NBA head coach. Everything old is new again... http://www.recordonline.com/archive/2001/11/18/kkgcolum.htm
