I loved having JV on the Astros, the dude is pure class.................most importantly I will miss seeing Kate at the juice box......farewell
Congrats and grateful for your contributions in obtaining a few trophies for this org … you will always be an Astro to us native Houstonians. Legacy secured.
JV needs 38 wins. If it's reasonable to think he can possibly pitch through his age 45 season, that's 4 more years. The past 2 years, he has won 41% of his starts, which would require 93 starts, or 23 per season. For his career, he has won almost exactly 50% of his starts which would require 76 starts or 19 per season. That's a tough ask. Very long odds but not impossible. He is basically at a point where he needs to make positive progress each year and can't afford another major injury. I would say he must have at least 10 and probably 12 or 13 wins in 2025 to keep hope alive. That would require AT LEAST 20 starts and realistically, 25+. I hope he gets 32-35 wins over the next 3 seasons and Astros sign him for 2028 with him needing 3-6 wins.
I think unless he gets seriously injured, he will get 300. He will force himself out there and play for the minimum if that’s what it takes for a contender to give him a rotation spot. But the next 2 seasons are crucial for getting him close enough to eke it out. If he doesn’t win 10 games next season it’s probably over. Once he gets within 15 wins some team will give him a contract just to get him over the hump even if it’s a rebuilding team looking to fill the seats.
I agree with this but that only works if he continues to get wins. I wonder if SF will employ an opener to schedule him in innings 2-6 or even 3-7 instead of risking him not getting through the 5th inning of a start? - age 45 = 300 wins - age 44 = at least 292 wins - age 43 = at least 283 wins - age 42 = at least 273 wins What do you think?
I don't hate it, instant draw for the new team and they won't contend anytime soon so it could be a win win
B U T He would be pitching for the other team unless the A's improve their talent and prospects of competing before then. He is going to want to pitch for a team all but guaranteed to get 85+ wins at least.
Then he signed with the wrong team this year. There’s a better than reasonable expectation that the As could be better than the Giants in 2025.
I follow the Giants, and I'm not sure we can bet on them getting to 85 this next year. They at least found a shortstop this off season, but their lineup will continue striking no fear in the league. Their division suppresses their prospects too. Was a little surprised that JV chose them, BUT he will definitely get some chances to pitch and he'll get some starts in a "pitcher friendly" ball park. It's just not very winning friendly.
Pitcher friendly park no doubt his fastball doesn't move anymore. There's going to be a ton of doubles
Wish he would’ve retired here, but if he wants to keep pitching I’m glad it not for us. Maybe the last of his kind, hope he wears the H in cooperstown
Facing Colorado at Coors isn't a great matchup for him given what guys are doing to his fastball these days.
Wouldn't count Verlander out just yet, as it can take a solid year to return to peak form after an absence. He's only one year removed from 13-8 with a 3.22 era and only 2 years from a Cy Young. The bell has not ring, rang or rung for the dead just yet.
