No. Myers will not be a Class A or B free agent so there won't be the compensatory picks like the team received for Valverde. There is no reason to keep Myers. He's having a career year on a cheap one-year contract and next season will enter into his 30's and start to become very expensive. The Astros aren't contenting this year and it's safe to say they won't next year as well. I don't have a lot of confidence in the competence of Wade and the rest of the front office, but (considering the state of the franschise) I'd consider it a job well done if they can get the team talented enough to be a yearly contender in 2014-2015. This year's trading deadline will a turning point (good or bad) in that aim. So i'll reserve Judgment, but Wade's recent comments on how they view Myers as a foundation for future rotations scares the crap of me. If they keep him I wouldn't be surprised to see them offer something like a 3/30 million (albatross of a) contract for Myers. Sort of like the contract they offerred Wolf two years ago (thankfully the Astros escaped that one after the economy went south). But even if you think that would be a good contract for Myers, there is no reason not to trade Myers for prospects now because, in all (about 100%) likelihood, he will be free agent this summer and the astros could still sign him to a horrible contract then without losing draft picks. There is absolutely no legitimate reason not to agressively shop Myers at the deadline. What ultimately happens with the Oswalt, Myers, etc potential deals, imo, will be a telltale sign of if the front office has learned from its mistakes and "gets it". Imo there is a very reason danger of the Astros falling into a type of Pirates or Baltimore limo and not being talented enough to compete for ~10 + years. This years deadline is an important step if they want to headoff than type of disaster. Here's hoping the Astros have a brighter future a week from now.
