(Just out of curiosity) why you choose Houston over any other cities?

Born and raised in South Texas. Houston used to be THE place for everyone to summer vacation in the 80s with Astroworld, Waterworld, Galleria, etc... Then San Antonio opened Sea World and Fiesta Texas while Astroworld started to die. Then San Antonio was the place in the 90s for summer vacations.

Because of College and my fond memories of summer vacations in Houston, I moved here. Got a job after graduation and started to create some roots here. Out of the city proper now but I'll probably die in the area. Houston area is a great place (cost of living and options) to live but not to vacation (used to be) anymore. Which isn't an issue if you live here. So no I just vacation elsewhere and get the best of both.

 

So...you're still here because? I don't understand this sentiment. If it sucks so bad, go somewhere else. There's nothing that says you have to live in the city/state/country you grew up in.

Born in PA...moved to Houston when I was 4. Lived here until I was 24 and then lived in SA and Austin for 15 years. Came back in late 2014. For all the reasons REEKO_HTOWN listed plus access to the coast, plenty of things to do, and being a great place to raise my kids. I was getting priced out of Austin and was having a hard time finding a job after being let go of the one I had for 7 years. I wasn't young and/or in tech. Found a great job here that doesn't require me to deal with traffic on a daily basis. My money goes much further here and I don't have to deal with the incessant whining b****fest Austin has become.

 

Born and raised. Moved to San Diego and Honolulu for a time, always end up coming back to Houston because of family. I'm always stressed out in Houston. The weather. The sports. The ugly and flat city itself. I try and avoid friends i grew up with, but it seems unavoidable even in such a big city. I find myself more at peace when i leave. Even Austin with it's hills, etc satisfies me in a visual way that Houston can never do.

San Diego is perfect for me. Sunshine year round with no humidity. Beautiful coast and ocean breeze. Water is too damn cold though. Go inland and it feels like you're suddenly in a different part of the country. LA, Vegas, Phoenix/Scotsdale, Mexico all just a quick drive away. The higher cost of living might be worth the more relaxed and healthier state of mind i'm always in when in Southern California. Even when i would get stuck on the 5 for hours due to traffic, it felt fine compared to being stuck in traffic here.

 

My wife and I are discussing possible moves to Atlanta, Charlotte, Asheville, or Greenville SC.

Neither of us are really tied to Houston or Texas at all rather than family.

Raised in Htown in the 80`s and loved it (Klein Forest-Astrodome-The original Ninfas-Astroworld-North Oaks Mall-Texas Tumbleweed) but moved to Omaha Ne in 2000 for my job. Love it here but I also like to get back to Htown to see my folks a few times a year and enjoy real Mexican food

Moved back to Houston from Chicago when I was young man because my family was here. They are still the primary reason I'm still here. But, I have so many roots put down now that even if my brother and parents died/moved, it'd be hard to go. My children have friends here now, and a home they don't want to leave. My wife owns a business here. I work in an industry with many companies headquartered in Houston. We have friends here, church here, etc.

So you have to go way back to not when I chose Houston, but when my parents chose Houston. Because they had gone to live in Mexico, in France, and had lived in other parts of Texas too. Though my dad had a sister in Houston, he didn't pick the city for family. They came here for the jobs. And, though the job market didn't draw me here from Chicago, neither did the lack of job prospects repel me like it would have if, say, my family was all living in Kerrville or something. The appeal of Houston is based foremost on jobs, even when other factors are the catalysts.

 

Family, job market, cost of living, climate.

I think that's the big four. Family is all here, good jobs to choose from in most industries, affordable, and winters aren't too harsh. Obviously July/August suck but the rest of the year isn't too bad. I can't fathom living up north and not being able to be outside for days at a time during bad snows.

It's nice because you can maximize your earning potential without throwing it all away on housing, etc. and you're still a few hours from places like the hill country for a nice weekend getaway. All that's missing is a great beach, but at least we have a beach nearby.

Without the family tie, it would still be on my short list of places to live. Cali is a nice place to dream about but cost of living is a b****, Florida seems nice on the surface but I've never really heard anyone say that they liked living there. One place I would strongly consider is Greenville/Charlotte/Charleston/Asheville vicinity - close to the mountains, not too far from a nice beach, affordable (I think) - job market might be the only holdup there.

Born and raised in Houston, then onto Austin, now in Seattle. I love Houston, but it's the type of city that only someone from there can love. After experiencing the climate and scenery of Seattle, I don't see myself leaving.

 

I love a lot about Houston, all the different cultures/diversity, the food, the arts, being near water, etc.

The thing I definitely don't miss is the weather, just unbearable for too much of the year. Definitely prefer the weather here in Denver.

 

Lived here for 2 years when I was a toddler. My father grew up here and my grandparents reside in Houston.

I grew up over seas, and always considered Houston my 2nd home because we came back to it every summer to visit my grandparents as I was growing up.

Because of that, I came back to the US / TX for college, and then moved to Houston after graduation in hopes of finding a decent job.

I'm still itching for a move to central Tx though, as my folks have made Bee Cave their new home and I've fallen in love with all the out door activities available.

I moved to Austin, which it turns out was the best option as family in Houston is still close and i have family in Austin as well. All the things about Austin that people point out they like, I like. Even though I'm not a huge music person. I just like all the green, hills, nature, waterways, outdoor activities, smaller size, etc.

We thought about moving to Denver, or Seattle. I briefly looked into North Carolina. Considered San Diego for a time. I'd be fine with any of those, family aside. I'd also do Hawaii, but the wife thinks its just too far, which is true but I don't care.

Was in Houston 2 months ago. Visited family in the burbs, then went to the zoo. Even in the 6 years since I moved, it feels like the city and traffic has doubled in size. People in Austin complain about the size and growth, but Houston is insane. It firmly cemented that I just can't do that size anymore.

So if I ever left Austin it would probably be for somewhere even smaller, or if a big city, would need to have unique, individualizes neighborhoods with a "homemade" feel and decent access to town.
