Are you unlucky that it happened in the first place?

Actually not and I was pretty calm throughout the whole experience. I didn't really realize how dangerous the situation was until after I was almost home. When I was spinning out the main thought through my mind was "Oh $#!T" and trying to get control. When I stopped in the snow I think I was more embarrassed than scared. I switched on my hazards and shut everything down to try to get the car started again. Other cars were slowing down and I was worried that some would try to pull over to help so I just kept giving the other cars a thumbs up as they drove by.

This is the third spinout I've had before and once I was able to pull a 360 and turn out of it and keep on going without stalling or coming off the road so I've had some experience. Given that I went across the whole freeway and though this was the most potentially dangerous. Luckily though traffic was light and other cars were going much slower than I was.

I've also had a couple of other brushes with death and I think my martial arts training helped. I am very used to being spun around. That said though it's one of those things you think about for awhile after it happens.

I was probably going about 45 mph when I spun out. I've driven faster than that before in snow but won't from here on out.

Yep and the worst part is now I gotta go out and shovel it from my sidewalk and driveway.

As far as this being a sign to come back to Houston that maybe but the first time I spun out was during a rainstorm in Houston on Kirby. I was 16 at the time and a new driver. I slammed on the breaks hard when I felt the wheels slip and spun about 480 degrees to end up against the curb. Luckily there was almost no traffic and I wasn't going that fast. I've been pretty lucky with things like that. Maybe too lucky which made me overconfident in my driving.

Thanks for y'all's good comments. Really appreciate it.

Definitely glad you're okay. Thank goodness there were no other cars between you and the four lanes you were spinning on. Good job handling the driving difficulties.

Unfortunately, the person on 290 and Antoine n Houston this morning wasn't so lucky. I just drove past that wreck to see the coroners cleaning the body off the freeway. Not a good way to start the day.

    So glad you're okay.

Question for a teachable moment for the rest of us though: as someone without a lot of "bad weather" driving experience, I've always heard that you "steer into the spin," or "steer with the spin" instead of against it.

That's never made sense to me. What makes sense is (definitely) no brake, no gas, and then keep your tires straight, praying for regaining traction.

Your thoughts? Maybe what I've heard isn't relevant to snow anyway.

Glad you were able to put that spinout in an armbar.
All those years of playing Gran Turismo has proved worthwhile.

Good to hear you are OK. We got back into town yesterday around 9:30 AM (from Houston) and the cab drive home wasn't too bad. Fortunately I have a job where I can work from home and didn't have to get out in the mess this morning. Years ago I did a 360 as I was getting on a freeway. That was fun.

reminds me of the time leaving town on 59 and near Rosenberg in a heavy rainstorm. You couldn't see squat because the rain was heavy, so most cars were creeping along at 35 or so (it was a friday so there was a decent amount of traffic behind and in front). Then suddenly, some truck comes hauling ass (probably 60) and veers onto the left shoulder to pass everyone the pack of cars I was in. As soon as the truck passes us it begins to hydroplane.

The truck slides into our lane while spinning 180 degrees to the point where it is facing us head on about 15 yards away. For a split second, time stopped and I make eye contact with the person driving. Luckily, the truck continues to spin and hydroplane left to right, into the next lane and eventually ending up in a small gully off to the right side of the shoulder and finally came to a stop, nearly flipping.

Moments like that are crazy. You can be doing nothing wrong and some A-hole thinks he's invincible because he's in a truck and nearly takes you out.
