**Sorry if this is old news on the board!** Just got my tickets on the lawn... Not REAL familiar with the band but have heard great things about them. Any recommendations for albums to track down to get aquainted? Have been itching for a good concert, so I am excited. Anyone else going?
Yeah man, I'm going. I'll be sitting in the right section Row R. My favorite Radiohead album is The Bends, so check that one out. They havent been playing many songs from it on this tour though, so I'd check out Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Theif to get a better idea of what you will hear at the show.
I have three Radiohead albums and they are all good, IMO. OK Computer is a GREAT Radiohead album and is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums ever (Radiohead fans, that is). I also like the Bends and Kid A. Radiohead's music is, IMO, kind of strange so you really should familiarize yourself with it beforehand. I've seen them twice. Once with Belly at a bar on Richmond (Rockefeller's West?) and the other time was opening for REM at the woodlands.
My company has season tickets to the Woodlands Pavilion, and I got lucky and snagged 4 tickets. Center section up front, row E I believe. I can't friggin' wait!
Not counting live albums and import CDs and EPs, Radiohead has released 6 albums. They are as follows (with comments): "Pablo Honey" - more of a grunge album, includes one of their most famous songs in "Creep" but it is not the best song on the album; that would be "Anyone Can Play Guitar"; overall, their weakest album "The Bends" - probably their best album when it comes to songs, doesn't flow as well as later albums when it comes to an album concept but who cares when you have songs like "Fake Plastic Trees", "High and Dry", "Black Star" (one of my all-time favorite songs by them), and much more. A QUANTUM leap from "Pablo Honey"...highly recommended. "OK Computer" - possibly their best known and best overall album, deals with alienation brought on by machines. This is an album that really needs to be listened to in one sitting, not for individual songs. Favorite tracks include "Paranoid Android", "No Surprises", "Airbag", and "Karma Police". Not much guitar compared to "The Bends", this album was the one that really made a name for Radiohead as one of the best bands in the world today. "Kid A" - my personal favorite album by them, but hated and loathed by many others. However, I love techno/electronica music, and this album definitely has that. Has my all-time favorite song by them in "How to Disappear Completely". If you love techno/electronica, you need to pick up this album NOW! However, if you are expecting another "The Bends", you will be disappointed. "Amnesiac" - sometimes called a "Kid B", this album came out within a year's time of "Kid A". I am not too fond of this album and I'll leave it at that. "Hail to the Thief" - their latest album and to me, a vast improvement over "Amnesiac". Has some great songs like "We Suck Young Blood", "A Punchup at a Wedding", and my favorite song off that album, "Go to Sleep". Highly recommended as this album sounds more like "The Bends" (I think) then any of the other albums that came after it yet it also incorporates some of their styles off the other albums.
During the lunch break I picked up 'the bends' and 'Hail to the Thief'... so far so good... somewhat ashamed of myself for not owning some of these already...
Y'all are in for a treat. I saw them last Monday in Camden, NJ (just outside of Philly), and it was an awesome show. (In fact, I almost came on here and started a thread called "I Just Saw the Best Band in the World" when I got home but fell asleep instead.) I had lawn seats for the show, and it's the only time I've been on the lawn when every single person stood the whole time. The crowd was really into it, and the band responded in kind. You could tell how much fun they were having putting on the show -- yes, even Thom. Thom even slipped into "rock star" mode during Karma Police, letting the crowd sing a few lines while he stayed silent. Then he came back on the stage after the band had left and sang a couple lines a capella. Just awesome. It didn't hurt that it was a breezy summer night with no humidity and a perfect view of the Ben Franklin Bridge and the Philly skyliine reflecting over the Delaware River in the background. The new material, much like the Kid A stuff, is even better live. I think they vary their set lists a great deal, but if last week's show was any indication, if you wanted to familiarize yourself with the songs, you should pick up Hail to the Thief and Kid A. That's where they got most of the songs. But they did play 3 off of OK Computer and 3 off of The Bends. Really great set list -- great mix of old and new stuff. Plus they opened with "The Gloaming" which was an appropriately odd way to open the show. I'm jealous -- I'd see them again right now if I could. Y'all will have a blast.
Just spent some more time on ticketmaster(blah!), but had no clue all the good bands that are coming to Houston in Oct... So now besides Radiohead, I got tix to both Widespread shows and Guster... they are all within 2 weeks of each other in October... only got single tix to WP so let me know if you guys are going so we can spark up together before the show!
Speaking of Belly... I saw them open for the Velvet Underground and U2 in Paris a long time ago as well (93?). June 26, 1993, Hippodrome de Vincennes, Paris, France with Belly, supporting U2. Here is a scan (from someone else) of the ticket to that show (I've long since lost mine). If you look REAL closely you can see Belly and VU listed near the bottom...
i just missed out on Radiohead for the first time since Summer of 2001. not a big deal though, they were in Camden, NJ(which is basically in greater Philly) but they are rolling through MSG in early october. best live band i have ever seen, bar none. jeff from vandy, you will be converted into a fan once you experience one of their shows. have a great time, and i expect a setlist!
sounds amazing! reminds me of the Liberty State Park Show on Aug. 17, 2001. it was a beautiful summer night and New York's skyline was right behind the band. you could see the Statue of Liberty in the New York Harbor. that was my last great view of the twin towers. that was two years ago to the day almost! i remember it like it was yesterday. truly surreal. here is the setlist for your show, you lucky dog. Where does Radiohead rank among the other the bands you have seen live? Mine would be tool, beastie boys, and Ministry There are many factors though in what i percieve to be a good live show. thanx
for me it is radiohead, pink floyd, and page/plant. floyd and radiohead were similar experiences for me: giant spectacular shows with lasers, lights, huge television screens, and the music is surreal and visceral, i felt like i was high on the music. page and plant it was experiencing the artists themselves(being there with legends as they sang my favorite songs)
Funny you mention that. The buddy that I went to the Camden show with lives in NYC and was at the Liberty Park show. Every 15 minutes he would say, "Man, this really reminds me of the Liberty Park show when you could see the twin towers in the background." FYI, he ranked the Liberty Park show slightly above the Camden show.
didnt the VU put out a live album from those shows? on a weird VU side note, my friend went to school in georgia w/ mo tuckers kid and said that in the late 80's/early 90's she was a cashier at wal-mart! i saw belly at the vatican in 93. velocity girl opened up for them and some of those kids said that belly were into watching cartoon pornos on their tour bus. tanya was a kinky little thang!
