I liked it. Wished I would have seen it in IMAX, but DTS was OK at TinselTown Katy.

The story isn't far fetched, but I like the way the cinematography makes some dudes look cool and some mean dudes look cooler. My wife spent probably 25% of the time covering her eyes... I expected it, though  .

There were some twists on it that I didn't expect, but I didn't know anything about the battle, from some of the posts I am reading here, since I knew it was real, but didn't know the details of it.

I also enjoyed the wit of the screenplay and the sarcasm on some of the comments from the characters. It was at the right time. :D

Here are couple of "beefs" I have with the special effects or directing I didn't expect to find in such a good movie. SPOILERS ****
    * There were many bloody scenes, but none of the spartans had blood on themselves after the battle.
    * Blood doesn't ALWAYS come out of someone when getting speared. They over did it.
    * On the scene where the two friends are fighting is the most notorious fault: blood "magically" disappears in mid-air

    Overall, a 9 on a 10-point scale.

The woman and I saw it over the weekend and while she liked it, I thought it was just an OK movie.. IMO the movie was "The Cell" meets "Gladiator" the only thing I was impressed with was the visual style, and the thing that pissed me off the most was the score, for as many epic battles as it had the movie really badly needed help with the music..

I'm actually ok with those aspects of the movie because it is based on a comic book. Instead of comparing it to an epic movie, I was hoping for something like Sin City. So I went into the theater expecting a fun movie, and I was totally disappointed.

Outside of the blood, guts and nudity (which I do love), this movie was terrible IMO. The movie did a terrible job of developing its characters, and even the action scenes got redundant. It got so bad that it became a chore to watch the movie. Notwithstanding, there are some unintended comic gold in this flick:

I thought the scene where the wife is speaking in front of the council was pretty funny. In the span of a minute, she was accused of being an adulteror, she then killed her rapist and accusor, have the accusor drop Persian coins, got the council to label the accusor a traitor, and walked out the building without being touched. Maybe it's just me, but that was WAY over the top, and I thought it was hilarious.
Anyway, I didn't have too much fun in the movie and I am highly disappointed.

Saw the movie last night and I was thoroughly entertained. The visuals are spectacular and the battle scenes are extremely intense and beautifully shot. I found myself clutching my seat throughout the battle scenes.

Also, the acting was not as bad as I thought it would be. Gerard Butler just oozes charisma.

Rokkit stated his OPINION of the movie, which you deem invalid because YOU find it misleading and not in agreement w/ critics' reviews. I can go out and say 300 was the best movie of all time, w/ the best acting and character development of any movie in the history of time. It's your right to say you disagree (especially if you've ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE), but what's the point in trying to change my own personal opinion? I didn't find Rokkit's opinion misleading (because it's his OPINION), and it's his right to say he feels the movie is more than what other critics felt (although you're the only one who seems to infer this). Please stop this diabtribe and cluttering up this thread, especially w/ your personal attacks which are unwarranted.

Ok. I caught it yesterday and thought it was great. It was a visual spectacle and the fight scenes were fantastic. The style and atmosphere were very unique and amplified the action. A fun movie and more substance then I expected. You could take a random frame from this movie and make a killer movie poster out of it.

i watched 300 with my gf and she slept for most of the movie hahha.
having read gates of fire and Herodotus History, i could follow the dialog(mostly one liners) easily , but for those who have no real background info of the battle, 300 might be average at best.

there are many scene that were left out and added to the 300 comparing to Gates of Fire

Left out : spartan slave society, battle squires and helots, greeks who stayed to die with the spartans, leonidas is actually older-around 55 yr olds, explanations of various warrior groups under xerxes( for ex. the emissary was egyptian...) the deformed guy who betrayed the spartans was a farmer and not deformed like that, and the reason why he did it was not known, but the movie implied that its because leonidas rejected him, feel free to add more .

added : the wolf, the rape of leonidas wife, the story about him waging illegal war, the weird oracle scene, the meeting between leonidas and xerses, and many more.

Yeah, I cringed everytime a black guy reminded the Spartans that the Persians were going to enslave the Spartan women. Don't be too subtle, Zack Snyder.... All that was missing were topless women banging on drums, lol.

Anyway, it was one of the most visually stunning and visually well-framed movies I've seen. I'm a fan of graphic novels and comic art and I really enjoyed how the movie seemed to move from one beautiful frame to the next. It will be awesome to see a film combine this kind of artistry with real character development.

Diatribe? Who exactly is angry here? And where did the word "opinion" come from..? May I also say, you're rather late there, Jay.

"GF and another women who don't like (insert general movie description here).. liked this one" You classify this as an opinion?

Here's his only opinion in all of his posts, which I never said anything about: This movie is good.

I was all already finished here.. then you pull me back in.. yet, most of your post is aimed at stopping me from cluttering up this thread?

I wouldn't say unwarranted.. The words used to describe his approach and his posting, were pretty much spot-on. The guy actually felt I 'needed' his review 'simplified' and 'explained', and, considering how we went about 'explaining'..I'd say he had it comming.. I guess - read his posts, I seriously doubt he cares. I doubt he's even 'aware'.. if you understand what I mean. And on my end, I stopped taking him seriously and started laughing by his 4th 'explanation'. My only fault was not seeing it sooner)

And, you're right, he can say whatever he wants. So can I. Correct?

Clearly you don't want to comprehend what people say. And if you feel it's necessary to make character insults because of how someone posts...well I guess that makes you a better person. I'm done. I can't stop you on the other hand, obviously. Carry on. I know you will anyways... Oh yeah, why don't you actually watch the movie, it's not bad. ;)

Thanks jay, but don't waste your time and make the mistake I made. You're talking to a brick wall with this one. He's resorted to classic net insults as his 'argument' fell apart, which is all the justification I need. I should have recognized what I was dealing with from the start. Don't let him pull you in too.

Glad you enjoyed the movie. :)

Was it worth the bother to defend this, Proffesor Jay?

    Do those statements sound familiar..?

    They should.

    Though..

I liked the way I phrased them better..

The icing = "when his argument fell apart"

I'm just gonna reply this for every one of those gems:

Let's hope there are no more.. :)

And between us both.. I can't believe you fault me with the inability to comprehend.

Really, read his posts. I dare you to tell me I didn't sum his 'argument' and 'willingness' to 'comprehend' perfectly, be it in the form of mocking satire.. I dare you, please. :) And therein, lies the necessity, as you put it, for 'character insults'. Because I knew, they would simply flying over his head and safely bounce away from his little walled in mental enclosure.

And, btw, Jay. Before all this, I wanted to see the movie , on DVD..

Now, after having heard 99% of reviewers on this board (You don't seek a reputable critic's review for 300, honestly, Jay..) and having witnessed someone of Rokkit's .. erm.. mindlessness(replace it with "quality" if you like), be so passionately idiotic about his pre-concieved notion that a broad generality like, "two women that usually don't like dumb violent movies, liked it" can be taken in only one direct way, and absolutely, not at all worth examining or re-thinking, even the tiniest bit. Have made me believe i made the right choice.. DVD it is.

    :D

I'm thinking you might have trouble following the plot line of 300.

Funny you should I ask... Because, I have not..

Tell me, was it a dumb action movie? Or, did a girl or two you know happen to like it?
