I really hope you're wrong. 300 is a somewhat true story, as Braveheart was.

Why people like Gladiator, which was nothing more than a plaigarized Braveheart story based on nothing astounds me. (I like to call it "Bastardator.")

I'm hoping 300 kept to the historical tale.

Say what y'all want about the movie "Titanic." Other than the cheesy love story, it was amazingly accurate. Speaking of which, I need to find out if people agree with me on this...

there is plenty of nudity in it...Leonidas has sex with his wife...which is almost softcore p*rn...i dont wanna spoil it too much unless u guys want details...i could describe the scene

theres a couple other parts with random unnecessary nudity...not the best stuff either...but hey...its nudity :D

just don't take ur kids with u or if u do...be prepared to cover their eyes instantly...meaning there are no hints or signs that a nude scene is bout to come..

Exactly. Unless it's full frontal male nudity.

I don't really see how Gladiator was related to Braveheart at all.

Anyway, while it was wildly inaccurate, gladiator was in fact based on historical events. The emperors depicted were real. Commodus was a blood thirsty maniac who did have incest with sisters. He also was obsessed with the gladiator games and even fought as a gladiator. He was killed by a wrestler however and not in the coliseum. So while it was horrible inaccurate, it was based on history. I believe it was historical fiction. lol

    Movie was outstanding.

Very stylized and action oriented obviously, a good amount of violence, and more emotion and character than some people would have you believe.

My gf and my friend's wife were with us and they hate the 'dumb action movie' type...yet they liked 300.

In any case, it is gorgeous and if you are a fan of movies/graphic novels at all you should try to see this on the big screen.

"gorgeous graphic novels" are pretty much NOT "dumb action movies" in description.. which is subjective on movie "epics" like this one..

in the eyes of most women.. im sure when they think of "dumb action movie" types.. they think of "Con Air" or "The Rock" .

My gf considers anything loud and with violence a 'dumb action movie', if that's a better reference for you. :)

what did she think of the war sequences in Braveheart? The battles in the Last Samurai?

You'd be surprised what some women are willing to forgive if it has the slightest bit of romance, style and artistic aesthetic value in it's presentation and execution of "loud and violent"..

and from the trailers and mention of "mutants" in this thread.. I'm guessing it probably adds a bit of greek mythology into the mix..

another little add on that would please plenty-a-female.

    No, I wouldn't be.

And nothing in the marketing of this film really emphasizes any of those other values...making it harder use as a selling point.

In any case, if you really think that this would be an easy sell to the vast majority of female audiences that makes many movies blockbusters...then I'm going to have to disagree with you there.

Saw it yesterday on opening day... it was pretty good, I was expecting a little more, but good nonetheless. I guess I wished a little early about the "violence + nudity = best picture"

The movie was full of huge, beefy, plastic-looking barbarians. My girlfriend and I were just totally amazed.. not ONE skinny looking guy (except kids)! Even the most insignificant character like this one extra who was sweeping the floor was cut as S***!

I guess it was both a chic/guy movie in the sense that it must've been aesthetically pleasing to a girl's eyes. She was like "OMG! lookit that abercrombie guy!" the whole night... sigh...

I've never felt so skinny and out of shape before after coming out from the movies.. and I semi-work out.

How did you lose your way from your own post?

I was replying in context to what you said, essentially: "two women I saw the movie with liked it, even though they hate 'dumb action move' type" .. Had nothing to do with marketing..

I was pointing out why a woman would like it upon viewing .. despite being anti- 'dumb action movies'. Not why they'd be attracted to it enough to want to go see it themselves..

Exactly what are you trying to have a debate about here? Are you bored this morning?

Do you really think you would know better than I the type of movies the women with me last night would like? If I make the statement "they wouldn't usually like this type of movie...but they liked this one" don't you think that could be taken at face value?

I think I'm a little more aware of their preferences than you, wouldn't you say? And what they would personally consider a 'dumb action movie'?

You took a subjective comment...called it subjective...and are trying to debate it? I really don't know what you are trying to accomplish here.

Not too mention...you haven't even seen it, from what I gather?

No, because in context of your initial post it acted as a plus for the movie, when it really isn't.. See Yaozer's post for a more honest comment of "even women that hate loud voilence, liked it"..

I called the broad description "dumb action movie" quoted from the lips of casual movie going women.. subjective.. as it is.. Because to most aware film-goers, including myself, from the majoral stance on this movie by those that have seen it, "zero plot, zero character developement, tons of stylized action and nudity", and majority of reviews being true to the trailers, this would qualify as a 'dumb action movie' though I wouldn't exactly use those 'casual' movie going words..

So I was pointing out why they might not see it as one or make it an exception.. Because your comment to me seemed misleading as praise, for those interested in the reviews made in this thread, unlike Yaozer's.

    No debate really..

I really didn't want to get this much into it but, since you appeared to think I needed your initial post clarified, I felt compelled to do so with mine in return.

It doesn't. It's not a movie based on the Battle of Thermopylae, it's the movie version of a graphic novel that tells a fictionalized hyper realistic version of the Battle of Thermopylae. Otherwise, the movie would be called 5,200.

If we go with box office results..then it'd be Pirates: Dead Man's Chest, Jurassic Park and Independence Day.

My own three favorites...probably The Rock, lets just say the Pirates trilogy and I suppose Jurassic Park...honorable mentions to Speed, Face/Off, Armageddon, True Lies, Underworld and Fifth Element.
