Exactly, it's an adapation of a graphic novel. I was almost positive stuff like this would start pouring out, jezz people it's a movie and not meant to serve as historical record
You know that, and I know that.. but stupid people don't know that. Ya see, what happens is.... stupid people go to a movie and they actually think it's real. This happens even with movies that are not, in any way, based on fact. Now, if a movie actually has some factual basis (Titanic, Da Vinci Code, 300, etc) then stupid people believe it even more. So, then, ask yourself, "How many stupid people are out there out there? And how many will believe this was all real?" (note: Britney Spears believes that time machines exist.)
GREAT movie. The visual effects were haunting. It came off more as an epic adventure rather than some kind of historical piece...and it definitely entertained. Ten stars!
If you want historical accuracy and want to watch a long drawn out movie with not much action, than this movie is not for you! If you want action packed from start to finish, entertaining, visual effects, badass movie (with not much plot, but still better than the book) and whatever other cliche quotes you can think of, then you need to watch this incredibly badness of a flick right now! Who cares what all the "realist" have to say about it not being accurate, ITS A FREAKING MOVIE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO ENTERTAIN, THAT IS WHY WE GO TO THE MOVIES AND HAVE OUR LITTLE BAGS OF POPCORN ON OUR SIDES MUCHING DOWN, WHILE WE SIT THERE IN AWE JUST LOOKING AT THE SCREEN!!! Now with that, treat yourself to something that will take you away from the stresses of everyday life (or a rockets thrashing) and watch 300. It was well worth the 9$'s I spent. My 2 cents
just got back from seeing it in IMAX... best action movie of this kind that i have ever seen. not great, but reallllllllllllllllly good.
Wow this movie was amazing. Great visual effects and the fights were incredibly gory which made it better.
Saw it yesterday and am somewhat dissapointed in it. It is visually amazing but I found it to be way too simplistic in its depiction of good and evil and a very twisted version of good. I wrote some comments in the D & D thread about the movie regarding some of the historical and cultural problems that I had with the movie but I found some of a lot of the plot points problematic. Spoiler The defeat of the Spartans being attributed to the treachery of a deformed Spartan seemed a really forced argument supporting the Spartan Darwinian ethic, physical weakness also implies weakness in other areas, but also seemed unnecessary. Leonidas tells Astinos he can't fight in the battle because he can't be part of the phalanx yet in the battle there are plenty of times they aren't fighting in a phalanx. For that matter the Acadians don't fight in a phalanx and he could've just assigned Astinos to fight with the Acadians. Spoiler Understandably in movies based on real events they are going to make the setting look more dramatic but the depiction of Thermopylae seemed almost ridiculous. The set it looked like it was only 30 feet wide and then there was a passage running along cliffs infront of it about a 100 feet wide. It doesn't make sense that a 100 foot 20 foot high wall blocking the passage would've stopped a million person army with elephants who could've just knocked down that wall and bypassed Thermopylae. For that matter they show Xerxes and Persian archers standing on top of Thermopylae. If it really was that narrow couldn't some Persians climb on top of their and and rain down arrows stones and explosives. I don't know the history well enough to know if the Persians did have gun powder but if Thermopylae is that narrow it would've been an easy matter of making a bigger bomb and catapulting it, tying it to a rhino or rolling it at the line of Spartans in Thermoplyae. I thought it was an entertaining movie but fell far short of my expectations. I wasn't expecting historical accuracy and could let a lot of that pass but there is a point that its hard to suspend disbelief and this movie crossed that point. It was a movie made for people who like pro-wrestling, God of War video games and with extra testosterone but for me was too simplistic and cartoonish in its depictions.
pleeeease, this movie wasnt supposed to be believable! if anything, you should have realized that when there was a goat playing a guitar. you people and your historical believablity stuff kill me! You had to know going in that this movie was going to be nothing but gore and killing. if you want to learn how it really happened, go to wikipedia or something. if you wanna see some awesome battle scenes and tons of dead bodies and destruction everywhere, go see the movie.
I thought it was pretty good, although at times it cut dangerously close to "Gladiator" territory (music, cornfields, etc). I joked to my friends during the movie that it followed a video game pattern of increasing difficulty: Spoiler Level 1: Archer evasion! Level 2: Puny meatshield Persians BOSS: SuperMega Mutant Freak Level 2: The Immortals (time trial attack until allies arrive) Level 3: Elephants with Persians on top BOSS: Rampaging Rhino Level 4: Persians with bombs! Level 5: Immortals + archers + kitchen sink BOSS: Xerxes I guess the Spartans ran out of quarters for this game.
As I just mentioned in the D & D thread I wasn't going to the movie expecting a Ken Burns documentary. What I was expecting was some internal consistency and while I'm happy to suspend my disbelief in a movie somethings just defy suspension of disbelief, such as Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. Vesceysux, comparison of it to a video game is correct and to me it had the feel of a video game or a pro-wrestling match. I think its an entertaining movie but far far from a great movie and other than the visuals not that good of a movie. To put it in context for recent sword and sandal movies I would put it just ahead of Troy but way behind Gladiator.
I had the same feeling of watching a video game and actually used that description the other day. A lot of the fighting itself in the fight scenes felt VERY video gamish. I wanted to yell "COMBO" during the move. That said, I still thought it was awesome.
