I don't think it matters much what coach you bring in, the roster isn't going to be a contender without changes. I pretty much said the same thing when JVG was let go, but at the time things were reversed. We had 2 stars, but our supporting cast was terrible. Now we have a great supporting cast, but no stars. I don't think changing coaches makes either one of those situations into championship teams. On the surface that may look like the GM is at fault then, but considering he inherited a terrible salary cap situation and a roster filled with older role players and 2 injury prone stars that had minimal trade value, I think he has done about a good a job as any GM could be expected to. It's just a matter of riding this out and seeing what free agents and draft picks the team can aquire and getting that star player who can stay healthy. One bonus for Morey is that given his history I feel fairly confident that if we trade away a bunch of our assets to get a star, he will do a good job with low first round and 2nd round picks filling in those voids. Getting the star is the hard part, but that would be the case no matter who our gm was, and I would rather make no deal than handicap the team with Gilbert Arenas, or Vince Carter or Rashard Lewis just for the sake of making a trade for a former "name player" who wouldn't improve the team significantly at all.
JVG couldn't make this roster competitive. No coach could. It's undersized, lacks a triple-attack (pass, shoot, drive) player not to mention is weak on defense, rebounding, and IQ. Doesn't turn the ball over much though. I think JVG could bring some much needed discipline to this team, especially on the defensive end. And I don't think he's really had great offensive players to work with in his career outside of Yao and T-mac. He never had Artest or Ewing in NY. His best player might have been Houston, or the aging Sprewell. No one expected him to do much with the Knicks when he took over. The fact that he was able to rile Patrick Riley was amazing. He's done well with making guys play tough and hard, with energy and with intelligence. He got T-mac to be a team player (none of us had issues with his foot-in-the-mouth problem under JVG...funny isn't it?). He toughened Yao up and got him to play more dominating versus finesse, and he turned Rafer into a defensive point guard which he had never been. He's under-rated in many ways, and humble in a lot others. I think if he had this personal, he'd run an effective offense, but yes, he'd need to make changes. Of course, he'd probably bring back T-mac too and that would cause an uproar here. Could you imagine, T-mac and Yao and jVG, reunited as old men? Ha! Dream on baby!
You got it backwards.JVG desn't have Adelman's offensive players. Alston was the 3rd option on Rockets. That 1st round thing is way overblown. JVG would beat a no-playoff experience Portland team in 1st round too. JVG was unlucky to face Lakers, Dallas and Utah in 1st round. 2 heavily underdog teams who played as well as they could against Lakers and Dallas, and 1 nightmare match up against Utah which also went to game 7. Adelman couldn't pass Utah team either. He didn't have Yao, but he had a whole lot more capable role players than JVG. I think both are equal, but I'd prefer JVG's style in playoffs.
JVG can return only if he agrees to both coach and do color commentary at the same time. Mike the man up the entire game and offer to show the games with the "Van Gundy Commentary Track" on a subscriber only premium channel where cursing is allowed. It's like HBO for basketball. I would pay money to watch, for example, Van Gundy lighting into Kirk Snyder for failing to heed the coach's instruction not to foul.
I think we should bring talent. No coach is going to be able to coach a team with below-average-to-average players to a championship. Get the horses and find a driver. Adelman has proven with multiple teams that, with talent, he can win in this league. Give JVG enough talent and I'm sure he can win, too. Give each a squad with nothing but role players and/or injury-plagued players and you can expect mediocrity.
That's going to take a long time. Not sure if RA has the patience to wait it out, jVG is hungry to coach and will take this team in a heartbeat. I think Morey has a really tough job trying to build a contender in the next few years. We're too good to get a top 3 pick and too bad too attract free agents who want to win.
No, JVG is still thinking that 6-7 men rotation is the key for a team winning (he talked Knicks's winning on TV this year), so this team will go nowhere with six men rotation (no Yao, no TMac), plus that young players will get no chance to play under JVG.
Have you guys all forgotten how much you hated JVG when he was actually the coach here? All the comments about how he always looked pissed off and how he wasn't a good communicator with the players? This amnesia is awfully convenient.
After 10 games next season, this BBS would meltdown from the endless b****ing about how painful it is watch the Rockets O, even if they were winning. JVG's pre and post game comments would be entertaining though. BTW if JVG wanted to coach, he would be.
were did van gundy get us? first round exits? ok just to see if i remember right! give adleman crap rosters u get crap results!
We need someone that is a teacher / coach, young, first time head coaching job ( to hell with all the retreads )... Try to find a "RudyT" like coach... Elston Turner J R Dunn or Jack Sikma comes to mind?
Phew! I thought it was just me thinking that. Adelman has his flaws as a coach, but overall he's pretty good. This season's roster in particular is quite unbalanced; I don't think any coach could win too many more games than he has - and yes, I am aware that he keeps players like AB in too long, and does some odd substituting at the very end. Despite these flaws, he's a proven coach that I personally would like to see back next year.
NO FREAKING WAY to JVG I have been a Rockets fan since growing up and watching them with my dad, back right before the championships. Sleepy Floyd, Pete Chilcutt, Pervis Short, Derrick Chievous (LOL). Watching them under JVG was almost enough to make me quit watching. It was probably my worst memories as a fan. I voted someone else, BUT that depends in large to what they do with personnel. What I don't want to see is Adleman in charge of developing our young guys, or go thru a rebuilding process with him at the helm. Now if you can get some stars in here and force him to have to play the young guys for lack of depth, then he's the guy I want!!
Its funny how our appreciation for things increases as time goes on, even if we didn't like them at the time. I was against JVG at the end as I thought he was to blame for not getting out of the first round. That said, two of the things I took for granted have now been lost: defense and a tough as nails spirit and togetherness in the squad. Remember those days we had Wesley, Barry, Sura and Rafer? None of those were that talented but they busted their ass for the team. I voted for JVG as I desperately would like to see a Rockets team that TRIES on defense and works their tail off every night. I would probably worry about the offense eventually, but at the moment, that's the least of my concerns.
