No one ever said he would be a star and no one who followed his career with the Rockets thought that he had that potential. What many thought was that he would be a solid player in the rotation. For a couple of years he was, then he fell off the radar screen, seemed to lose his confidence and his shot. As for being "an unathletic 6'4" guard who has no handles or playmaking ability whatsoever," you are simply wrong. He had handles, but not nearly good enough to be a point. He could make plays, but not exceptionally well. He was athletic, but not athletic enough to overcome his other limitations. Making such flat statements like you know all there is to know about a player is rather foolish, in my opinion. Things are rarely that cut and dried.
Luther Head was a good sometimes great shooter who couldn't pass or dribble. He should get on an NBA roster though. Teams could do a lot worse.
Luther thrived in those years under JVG's stuctured offense and defense. He was given a very definite role as a spot-up three point shooter, flourishing in that role. Anyone remember that he had a streak of 37 straight games with a made three-point basket? But everything fell apart for him around when Adelman became the coach. It's not to say that Rick is a bad coach. But they tried to expand Luther's game to also be a playmaker and ballhandler... when almost every Rockets fan knows that Luther should NEVER play the point guard position. Luther tried to be a player that he wasn't. His three-point makes went down. He had two straight bad playoff performances. Clutchfans gave him a lot of hate (mostly undeserved). Now he's no longer a Rocket. He's a player you'd definitely wish could've stuck with the Rockets. But now, the best of luck to him wherever he plays next year.
I think I already admitted this in the other thread. I liked Luther. I still like Luther and hope he sticks somewhere. So yeah I miss him. Obviously he just didn't work out here with the Rockets.
He will but I do not think He will have a prolonged career. He will be lucky to stay in the league for the next 3 years.
I could go into details but I was just summarizing his weaknesses. He would be a good player on a rotation like the Orlando Magic. Run N' Gun 3's, he doesn't have to ball handle a lot, etc. I honestly thought Luther Head would have excelled in Rick Adelman's motion offense, but I guess I was wrong.
I miss luther head's bounce passes through a congested lane to Yao Ming.... SPEAKING OF...Why arent there videos of Lu's passing?
I remember one play where he completely owned Dirk Nowitski with his shot fake, shot drive, shot fake again, then drive. Lol.
Wish him well but do not miss him on our roster. Heck the guy can't find a job anywhere and he was our main sixth man on this team for way too long. Guys like head are what cost us that series.... Glad he is gone!
People trashing Wafer and hoping that we don't re-sign him, and now a "We miss you Luther Head" thread. What in the hell is going on?
hahahahahaha.......hahahahahaha..j/k...no way does he end up back here, but i really do wish him the best as he was a good dude and teamate as far as i know...just made to many mistakes turning the ball over...but good luck to him and i hope he finds a home, but not in houston...
i still love for luther to return. he's one of my favorite players. i had high hopes for him until that jazz series, but still like the guy. wish him luck for his future.
It's funny, he basically played SF in college, with Deron Williams and Dee Brown in the backcourt. Talk about small-ball, I loved those Illinois teams.
i got to actually meet luther and talk with him 1 on 1 for about 2 minutes at the ticket holders fun night. he really was a super nice guy, if he were 2 maybe 3 inches taller he would be a solid player in this league. hes got a little of both guard positions in him but not enuff of either to be considered one or the other. adleman thought he might have some potential at point but it just didnt work out. still really like the guy and hope he finds a team to fit in with. hang in there luther im still a fan of that outrageous JUMP shot
An intelligent post. I like it. I thought he more than made up for his size with his shooting ability. Under the right system, a role player like this can flourish and make plays.
