the fact that von wafer was more impressive last season than luther head has been his whole career doesn't make me miss him.
Ha. I hear ya. But anyway, i'll miss Head when he goes elsewhere and blows up for a good team. Until then, cutting him loose has proven the correct decision.
All kidding aside (OK, maybe a little kidding!), isn't Luther the poster boy for a player with potential who didn't pan out? His first couple of years, when he was lights out from downtown and getting heavy minutes in the rotation, Head seemed to be on his way to being a valuable player for the Rocks. In his second year, he hit 44% of his treys and shot 400 of them, playing about 28 minutes a game, with 2.4 assists and 1.7 turnovers. Sure, his defense was mediocre, but Luther looked to have a good future. What happened?
hey i'm actually a pretty big fan of luther head when he was here. He took the benchings with class and he was a nice contributor when JVG was coach. I hope the best for him. He's a good guy.
Couple of things working against Luther IMO: 1 - He was/is a very bad decision maker as a PG. IMO he was a much better cutter/shooter and was more effective off the ball 2 - He has a condition with his hip that effects his lateral quickness which hampered his defense when you take into consideration his height. He is quick end to end, but sliding his feet always was a problem. His quick hands made up for it as he could ball hawk and get steals, but guarding bigger 2's is a problem. I thought he was one of the better cutters we had, and would be a good fit for RA, but his short comings outweighed his strengths.
I remember that backdoor play we always ran for Luther and Yao. It worked most of the time, so i'm wondering: Why we don't run it for some of our bigger and more athletic guards?
He was classy because of his attitude towards the game and his team the problem was that He did not show enough to leave an impression. The only game I remember of him playing really well was the Spurs game last year. I thought that would be his spring board to being a contributing asset to the team. I guess it was a one game wonder.
the thing that sucks is the raw fact that luther is a sg in a pg's body. i've been watching some of the old highlights of past rockets' seasons and though i know the highlights only show his shining moments and not his inability to handle the ball for a pg, it reminded me how many big moments luther has had for us. from what i saw, i remember saying in my head "man i didn't know luther was that quick." he was a more than "good" shooter, a decent penetrator, below average ball handler (which hurts him more b/c he's 6'3), fair distributor, and a good off the ball player. he's too talented to not be on a roster next year.
Since we are discussing former Rockets guards who we miss for sentimental purposes ONLY. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moochie_Norris Martyn "Moochie" Norris (born July 27, 1973 in Washington, D.C.) is an American professional basketball player formerly in the NBA and currently with the Yakama Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association. Norris, a journeyman, played collegiately at Auburn University and at the University of West Florida. Early on in his career, Norris dealt with insomnia which he has suffered from for many years. Moochie was one of the lesser-known NBA players with his own bobblehead figurine sporting a synthetic afro when he was with the Houston Rockets in 2002[1] He is also noticeable for his large afro. He was given his nickname by his grandfather, who loved the Cab Calloway song, "Minnie the Moocher".[2] After the 2006 NBA season, Norris was placed on waivers by the New Orleans Hornets. He joined the Yakama Sun Kings of the CBA briefly in January 2007, played for Italian club Climamio Bologna from March to June of that year,[3] and in November returned to the Sun Kings,[4] where he is leading the league in assists.[5]
This goes to show you that coaches really do make or break you. If Van Gundy was still the coach I think Luther would of be sitting pretty with a 20 mill extension and be set for life. Now if he's lucky, will maybe get a mill.
I didn't miss Luther last year when Von Wafer proved to be much better, I hope Taylor can step up this year so I won't miss Wafer or Luther.
He's an unathletic 6'4" guard who has no handles or playmaking ability whatsoever. Players like that never make it to stardom.
I miss Michael Dickerson. I saw an article not too long ago about his bout with illness and the long recovery he's making. He brought so much energy and eagerness to his game. He reminds me of a smaller Joey Dorsey with a better outside shot and more IQ.
Luther Head was a good bench player but sadly he consistency and being able to take the ball to the hoop were his major problems. Which hurt us in the playoffs, because even a little more production from the bench could have helped the team, especially in the last Utah Jazz series. Although, I will give him, there was one game at home in that series where by not giving up on defense he helped the team out. But another flaw of his was the fact that he didn't have much defensive skills to begin with. Good guy but really wasn't long for this team. Then my friend we are in disagreement.
