No I don't think Yao is as good a passer as people say, but I don't think the reason is because he doesn't understand when to pass, I think its because of indecision and timing. When Yao becomes fully acclimated, he will be one of the best passing centers in history.

Dude, YOUR POSTS SUCK, if you can't refute my points that I make with stats, with nothing but "your theory is bunk or it sucks" then don't refute them. Go argue with some elementary kids

I *think* the people that argue about Miller's passing ability are the people who only look at stats and see his below-par average this year. Most fans should know he's a damn good player and passer.

I didn't tape the last game, so I can't review the 4th when Taylor and Yao were in together, but here is one thing I noticed... (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Taylor can make the entry pass to Yao. It may not be an assist, but considering how abysmal that skill seems to be on this team, it's worth noting.

    Deckard,

    Exactly.

Pgabrial has zero clue and tries to hide his lack of knowledge behdind statistics.

When you refute his arguments he ignores the main point of that refution and continues to spew rhetoric.

    MoT > EG

In most every aspect......EG is only 20, his body and mind have not matured. Heck our 26 and 27 year old guards minds have still not matured.

MoT is our 2nd most knowledgable player behind Ming, he understands team basketball.......

The problem with your speeding analogy is this: It doesn't make any sense. Its not that straight forward in basketball, do you agree? How do you judge if a car is speeding over the limit? Its virtually a fact that you went over the speed limit because of the radar gun, right? Basketball is different. Judging if someone is a good passer can be judge on assists ONLY to a degree. The difference here is no matter how much you look at it, its an opinion to rate your passing skills. There's not a radar gun in basketball to measure a players ability to see the whole floor to pass it to the open man. The only way you can judge it is watching him during the game.

    Ridiculous,

I brought up the fact that Mo Taylor shouldn't be in the starting line up for several reasons, one is he isn't that good of a passer. Someone refuted that so I listed statistics, now people such as yourself want to ingnore statistics.

If you reread the thread, I said Mo Taylor shouldn't be a starter because he A) doesn't rebound B) requires the ball to score. If Mo Taylor starts, then A) you have three players in the game who need the ball to be effective, Francis, Mobley, and Taylor, and B) who is the low post threat when Yao and Taylor are on the bench. Is it Cato, or Griffin. Neither one, so now you have filled your starting lineup with three one on one players, and B) your second squad doesn't have a low post threat.

Then, someone picked up on the fact that I said Mo Taylor was a below average passer, they wanted to argue, I refuted those arguments with facts, facts that no one has disproved or refuted my argument with stats or even stats, just blind statements like Mo Taylor is smarter. If people want to continue to debate passing, I have no problem with that.

    Pgabrial,

Stats are not facts, they are just stats.

If you watch all the games like the rest of us, you will see a lot more then just stats.

As someone correctly pointed out, Yao averages very few assists, yet he is a very good passer.

Stats can be skewed by what is asked of the player, is MoT's job to pass the ball when he is single covered? Or is it his job to hit that little jump hook that is money.

Mo T is a better player then EG in almost all regards, the sole exception is rebounding, where EG is a better rebounder then Mo, no doubt.

The Rockets are starting off poorly because teams have no respect for Posey or EG at the 3 point line, they sag in on Yao and close off the lane for SF and CM, thus daring EG and Posey to shoot the outside shot. This is why we are scoring around 16 points a game in the first quarter.

EG is not starters material yet, and it is a disservice to him to have him constantly beaten by the other teams PF, night in and night out.

Mo can at least hold is own.

stats aren't facts is the dumbest statement in this thread so far. I mean, for a person who's always talking about basketball IQ, to say stats aren't facts is crazy. I don't know about you, but I haven't seen a basketball ball IQ test yet are the Rockets players Basketball IQ scores listed when I go to just about any NBA website.

To say someone is smarter then someone else by what they see on television in a basketball game is an objective statement. A stat is a fact, it happened, it happens over the course of an 82 game season. You can go back and watch tape of the game to see if they happened.

I had to read a book for an Intro marketing class I took ages ago called "How to lie with statistics". You might find it usefull. Here is a link on Amazon.com

An assist means that you passed the ball to someone, and the other person scored by taking one dribble or none.

How does that translate to not being a good passer? Mo gets no assists off passing to Steve or Cuttino, and rarely from Posey. The only person he can get assists from is Yao Ming. The fact of the matetr is, he passes it to everyone at a very good rate.

    MoT is a good passer.

Okay, now I have been called a liar for reciting the same facts any of us can look up on any website about the NBA. Dude I'm not trying to sell you snake oil or beach front property in Arizona. What lie did I list, or which stat did I list is a lie?

The statistic is not the lie. The lie is your assertation that the statistic alone proves that Mo is a bad passer. Then, you try to use eight grade debate team tactics to insult anyone that doesn't agree with your flawed logic.

I didn't insult anyone, if you feel insulted by me listing statistics, then you have the inferiority complex. Its just an argument about basketball.

I'm not calling you a liar. The point is statistics is a good indicator but it does not tell the complete story. Like a high shooting percentage does not make Cato a good shooter or a decent assist total doesn't make Francis a good passer. Everyone besides you that has seen Mo play thinks he's an average to above average passer despite the assist totals. That is statistic in itself. We can discuss this over and over but you will not change anybody's mind becuase most people on this board has seen him play and knows he is a good passer. And anyone that has seen EG play including Yao knows he's the worse passer on the team.

OK, I will waste some of my time here.

Yes, stats are facts, simply in that they are hard numbers, they happened.

But when you use your STATS to INTERPRET some unknown questions--such as which player is a better passer--they are not facts. Put in another words, you can't always draw your conclusion based on YOUR STATS. At the minimum, you need more STATS that can paint you a more complete picture.

Last time I visited Las Vegas, I won 5 out of 8 in my black jack game. Now my wining stats is about 60%. Does that mean I am a suprior black-jack player? Or the wining percentage in Vegas is more than a half?

Now I'm not dream of lighten you up if you have never taken any STATS courses before. if you must, you can go on.

    Moe,

    Bingo.....

Stats themselves are just stats, but they don't tell the whole story.

The only real stat that matters is wins and losses.

Pgabrial seems to miss the point about team play, what stat shows a players sliding over to help on a defensive assignment?

What stat shows the player passing out of a double team to another player who in turn passes it to a wide open player for a field goal?

What stat shows knowing when to call a timeout versus running up the court and jumping in the air and tossing an errant pass to a trailing teamate and watching them brick a 3 pointer at the buzzer?

What stat shows a good outlet pass?

What stat shows when to double team a man on defense on a pick and roll? (something that Mo is good at by the way).

Pgabrial, get your head out of your St A$$ts and watch the games, your arguments are about as thin as typing paper.

    :)

Their not my numbers, there the NBA's official numbers. I could continue the argument by saying I've seen numerous times when Mo Taylor tries to pass the ball in traffic only to have it bounce off a teamates hands, but then someone will say they've seen him make good passes. I've seen Cato make good passes, Bill Walton commented on a great Cato pass during an ESPN broadcast. Is Cato a good passer, I saw it on TV, no we know he's not.
