They kind of had this thing thrust into their face. They had to investigate the alleged this very public hate crime and then they found the actor was a fraud and set it all up. I don't know what you would want them to do. They had to address it.

While that may be true, the police chief was smart enough to know that THIS would be the largest stage for this particular event. IF this message is important to you, you should be glad the chief picked the perfect time to get this message to the most people.
Not being in any way critical or questioning the police investigation of Smollet, and in fact think he gets off lucky to only get 3 years (should be much longer IMO). It was a serious crime and I think the police were extraordinarily careful and sensitive in their investigation and arrest. And, I think the police superintendent shows his anger with the crime Smollet committed (appropriately so). Which probably contributed to his point of frustration/unhappiness that this crime gets attention, and gun crime doesn't get the same/more level of attention (a challenge he is faced with constantly and one that is something that needs to be addressed).
For what it's worth I don't think he will serve much time at all. I'd say less than a year if anything.
