I also like this summary, but let's remember that the Quinn/Reed decisions were separate. We let a solid, young one go because of $$/longterm commitment reasons, and THEN signed the best available one under the guise of leadership
I'm not an expert on the NFL cap but i contended at the time that if we where bringing in ED Reed we should have cut manning and kept Quinn. Quinn is better suited for the strong safety and manning sucked last year.
Sure, but how do we even know what Quin would have taken since we didn't make an offer? Could we not have back-loaded his contract a bit to wait for Manning's contract to come up after this year? The Lions got him for ~$5 million a year which isn't exactly overpaying for a quality DB. Not like he got Mario Williams money. I'm not one to criticize every non popular move that a team makes, but the way this team has been managed from a roster standpoint has a lot to do with where we are now. Blame that on Bob, Rick, Gary...I don't know. We have let many good starters go, somewhat understandably due to salary constraints, but had no viable backup plan other than drafting and plugging in rookies (Newton and Ben Jones on the o-line) and signing a 34 year old veteran on his last legs. A lot of that would be covered up if we had an elite QB, but we don't. And the fact that we paid a lot of money for our non-elite QB put us at an even greater disadvantage.
X100000 Texans cap management has been bad and the Schaub contract just highlights that fact. Who else was out there to pay Schaub? You're telling me that if he played out his contract another team would swoop in and offer him a great deal? GTFO.
Gary says not a hairline fracture but a "significant knee injury" that will take some time. Shiloh moves up. Brandon can play safety. Have to see where this evaluation goes.
We still have 4 other safeties on the roster. Reed, Keo, Swearinger, and Pleasant. Not sure why Harris would have to play there.
Harris has been here longer. While some see the fact that he is in his third year and hasn't done anything as a negative, Kubes just sees it as valuable experience in the uber complicated Texans system and therefore an advantage. So Keo > Harris > Swearinger > Pleasant.
I haven't been paying attention as much this year but I swear i've seen us run 3 safeties onto the field at times. Am i going crazy?
It's week 7, Ed Reed is healthy, and Shiloh Keo is starting. I think it is safe to say that signing was a failure so far.
this is the uncle bob and capt. kubes way of doing business. if you don't like it you can just get out!
If you are going to put an audio clip of people cheering an injury then don't even bother to log into this forum... That's ewww and your mean..... Even other forums are now saying that we are messed up because of you....... Don't even log in..... Also, thanks to all the classy users that didn't put audio clips of fans cheering an injury... He is a human with family and stuff.... Don't deserve this...... UGH!!!!!!
I think out of all the teams that you listed, that needs a QB, only Jax would realistically need immediate help. Glennon has been good in Tampa, since starting over Freeman, while Pryor has been a surprise this season (even though the Chiefs D ate him alive.) Unless Freeman flames out in Minny, Jax and Hou should be the only ones taking QBs.
With all the heat (justifiably) Kubiak and Schaub have taken, an underscored subplot of the season has been how horrible the initial return on investment we've seen on the draft after Day 1. R1 - Hopkins, A+ R2 - Swearinger.....box safety with no cover skills? Needs another year? DBs can take time, so INC R3a - B. Williams - IR R3b - S. Montgomery - inactive on game days, unable to handle OLB duties, starting to smell like a bust R4 - T. Williams - IR R6a - D. Quessenberry - IR R6b - A. Bonner - IR R6c - C. Jones - cut R6d - R. Griffin - inactive until OD injury. INC That's a frighteningly bad initial return. And even if the IR rash was fluke luck, I don't think you can say any of those players were looking especially promising in the summer. But yes, I do find it to be a poor sign that DJ isn't even being talked about in the wake of our SS injury.
Yep... even if Rick Smith was in charge of the entire thing (which he is not)... that draft, combined with cap hell, combined with a subpar performance this year, combined with no viable depth/future prospects in waiting on the roster are all grounds for dismissal.
While it's hard to give him an accurate grade due to the QB situation, I wouldn't give Hopkins an A+ just yet.
