I say sign him and see what he can give you. Josh Smith can be a very dangerous player and his good friend Dwight might be able to keep him in line.
Ahh yes, the ol "He'll be different with our team! Our coaches/players can change/help/fix him!"
WOW, i am SHOCKED, absolutely shocked by the responses to this news by our fans. You mean to me we have chance to get josh freakin smith for nothing and nobody is jumping up for joy i cant believe how content most of you are with Joey Dorsey and Tarik Black... wow Morey should PICK UP JSmoove it will give us another athletic shotblocker to complement Dwight morey needs to sign smith NOW
agreed we need another big man that can block shots and rebound, not to mention he is athletic watch the mavs try to get him.. i hope he comes to houston
I'd argue it's the value of production per contract. On a lesser contract, how is he much different than a PF forward of Brewer? Shoots poorly, defends well but goes for blocks/steals too much and exposes himself. Moves well in the open floor and can finish in transition. At 1-3M a yr, that's good value. At $10-14M it's highway robbery.
Even if he took the minimum, there is still risk. One, you have to boot a player off the 12 man roster and two, he could seriously screw up chemistry.
and this is why the rockets wont go anywhere with this mindset.... who cares if you like josh smith as a person... he is a 6-10 athletic shotblocker/rebounder.... he would be an upgrade over dorsey and black

Dwight and Josh Smith are close, and im sure he and Harden are cool too probably from hanging out at All Star weekend over the years Dwight and Harden are the main cogs to this team, if they are cool with Josh Smith morey will get him
I would go after him. Does many things well even if he REALLY SUCKS at shooting. If we use him correctly, he can be a difference maker.

At $13.5 million, no way in hell should Morey have ever tried to acquire him. But at the minimum?? At the cost of Dorsey/Black's roster spot? Why the hell not? It's not like he is washed up and lost his athletic ability. Smith provides legitimate rim protection, which we have none of outside of Dwight. Look at who we are giving rotation minutes to right now - Tarik Black and Joey frikkin Dorsey. I'd honestly be shocked in we weren't one of the teams that were pursuing him on a minimum deal. Look at this line-up: C - Howard/Dorsey or Black/Capela PF- DMo/Smith/Jones SF- Ariza/Papa SG- Harden/Brewer/Schved PG- Beverley/JET/Canaan/Johnson Smith can really shore up our frontcourt until Jones comes back from his injury. And when the trade deadline comes around, it becomes that much easier to trade a DMo(please no) or Jones to get that third star. The obvious concern with Smith is his horrible shot selection, but if anything can convince him to stop chucking, it'll be playing on a contender with his good friend Dwight. Getting waived two years into a deal so large has to be a wake-up call for Smith. He's scaled back the long distance shots when on a contender once before, hopefully he'll do it again when he realizes he has a legitimate chance at the title. At a minimum salary, what's the real risk anyways?
