yeah i just noticed according to basketballinsiders, they're still under the cap. but don't they get access to the MLE if they trade or re-sign a player they have rights to and go over the cap? (I thought that was the case with Casspi but I was mistaken)
I see so even if they go over the cap if they trade for a player this offseason, they don't get the MLE (in the same year) but if they stay over the cap in the following offseason they get access to it, is that right?
And he has Beverley's contract in there, but he added an extra year as his option/NG rather than his 4th year. Probably the most up to date out there, though.
What is happening for Smith? He is thinking to be a loser again by leaving a good team for a bad team. I think we have the MLE, which should be enough for him.
My guess: While there are teams offering Smith significantly more than the $2.5M that the Rockets can pay him without touching the MLE, none of these offers is attractive enough for him to just grab it and run. Meanwhile, Smith is waiting for the resolution of the KJ situation. If KJ is signed for a low enough $ figure or if KJ is signed for a high enough $ figure that the Rockets would just let him go, the team may well be able to pay Smith with the rest of the MLE, or even the entire MLE, at a $ amount higher than $2.5M.
Nah. They would never sign ellis if hill wasnt tgere. Defence is their identity. Bird loves hill and he would never let him go esp for someone like jones who becomes rfa in 12 months.
Knowing he was only going to be able to retain one of the two when they hit FA next offseason probably played a part in Morey drafting Harrell .... along with being great value in the 2nd round. I know a lot of people want to move Jones for a PG (Myself included) but as the roster stands now , they cant make that trade unless they find another PF who can soak up ~20minutes a game and spot start. Really cant see them going into the season with just DMo (or Jones) and Harrell at the 4 spot. Whether its Smith or one of the other FA's , I think they almost have to sign someone at the position ..... Luckily there are a few capable players available , even if they aren't world beaters , we're not stuck with a "Joey Dorsey type" of desperation signing .... right now. With so many potential players - Scola , Boozer , Stat , Bargnani , Smith and a few others available to fill that spot for chump change , it appears that Morey can do what he stated in waiting to see how KJ plays out and then pick up one of those guys on a bargain contract .... then worry about a point guard after having replaced the guy he's shipping out in that deal.
Could this scenario be possible? - Rockets sign Smith with the MLE. - Kings sign McDaniels with room exception - Rockets trade Smith + Papas+ 1st round + Nick Johnson for McDaniels and Darren Collison.
No. You cannot sign-and-trade a player using the MLE. Also, a team cannot sign-and-trade another team's player.
It wouldn't be a "sign-and-trade" if it weren't immediate. Those are forbidden. A team CAN sign an outside free agent and then trade him upon the later to occur of (a) three months or (b) December 15. Certain players acquired in a sign-and-trade and receiving significant raises from the prior salary cannot be traded until January 15.

Wow, if the Kings did sign Smith that would be interesting to watch that disaster throughout the year. Rajon Rondo, Rudy Gay, Josh Smith and DeMarcus Cousins would make for some unbelievable basketball while the next play would be atrocious. These 4 players are some of the biggest headcases/knuckleheads of the past couple of years. They all have big mental issues with their games whether it is fading from game to game, inconsistencies, lack of effort from game to game, etc. All are extremely talented but not sure they would put it together for a whole season.
The Kings just signed Caron Butler. I dont know how much more cap space they have to sign Smoove and according to Bima we can offer more money to Smoove than the Clippers. Hmmm...
not to mention the absolute attitude meltdowns this team is capable of. they should hire ron artest/metta as their coach and complete the disfunction.
