Eh, there has to be more of a middle ground really. It's a mistake to think what you read on sports message boards on the Internet is the majority of sports fans that might listen to you. On the other hand you are right that they shouldn't think they are *only* the 'lunatic fringe.' but just look at the threads on here when it comes to radio hosts. Lots of anger, hate, insults, etc. That's what the internet often brings you. It wouldn't be healthy to get yourself fully involved in that if you are one of these hosts. Has to be somewhere in the middle. Don't be out of touch or detached from social media and the Internet. But don't really get too immersed in it. Lots of people use it for attention and the chance to say things because they are behind a keyboard.
Really? Jackson??? Matt Jackson is Josh Innes Lite and besides, he's working as a wal-Mart Greeter and has achieved a level of success in his career he never imagined possible.
Houston sports talk in general is so bad right now. It's going to be months and months of who will be the next Texans coach and who will the Texans draft. Every now in then a little obligatory Rockets talk is mixed in. I can't take it anymore. I don't care who Joe Schmo thinks the Texans should draft. It's the same thing over and over and over again, every day. Especially on 610. I wish I had a newer vehicle where satellite radio was an option (I know there are portable units). I've actually started listening to Dan Patrick more in the morning just for the variety of topics. I know many don't like him, but he gets really good, interesting guests.
Isnt the problem the callers? I mean even when hosts push for a topic it really matters what the callers want to talk about. Blame the rockets that no one wants to talk about them, they were the ones that decided to limit their viewership by doing that agreement with the astros and comcast. They have a great product and only 40% of people can watch easily. So callers/fans/sports teams and of course hosts all share the blame. But overall callers drive the conversation and the majority want to talk about how bad the texans are.
I think the callers are a huge part of the equation. And it's one of the reasons I'm a proponent of sports radio without callers. At 101 ESPN here in St. Louis, they have a fully local lineup with the exception of Mike and Mike from 5-9 and they don't take calls. At all. Period. They read some emails and texts but that's it. And that's the way I prefer it. I tune it to hear what the hosts and their guests have to say, not what Joe Fan has to say. I realize that this format requires that the host or hosts carry the entire show, but I think there are certainly some guys in the Houston market that can do that.
I agree completely, the callers are almost always the worst part of a show. The other thing that is a show killer IMO is the athletes themselves. Only an extremely small portion of the athlete population is smart or interesting enough to carry on a conversation that isn't completely boring. Most have me turning the dial almost immediately.
And here we have the elusive "Hater Troll". Please, MJ flushes more sports knowledge than Innes could ever wish to have. MJ will not only talk about the big three sports but will talk boxing. I miss Wex on the air but not hearing MJ talking Rockets really sucks. The only thing I want to hear about Innes is how a Philly fan split his wig at a remote.
Another good point. On the whole, I can't stand interviews with athletes and coaches. Rarely, if ever, is anything interesting or insightful said, but everyone trips over themselves to get them on the air.

nothing, i didnt feel like starting a thread, it seemed to me plenty of people were coming here to discuss sports talk in general
Yea I've listened to more 610 in the afternoons in the past week than I probably have in the past 3 years. I have always liked Sean so i'm glad he is getting the opportunity even though it's with Rich.
So I was listening to 610 and on their midday show and all they were talking about was Texans. How much can you talk about the same exact thing over and over.
until you start winning 11-12 games, then they'll talk 493rs or their favorite college teams or pop stuff.
I pretty much give up on Houston sports radio, it's going be nothing but Texans and College sports 80% of the time. It's on because I really don't know what else to listen to but I never expect myself to hear anything that interest me at all.
