You don't have to listen to innes to hear sports guys trash the texans. I'd rather hear it from guys who care about Houston sports, which is pretty much everyone else on the station. Innes isn't a guy that's gonna stir up "real passion."
Yeah, it only took me about 5 minutes before realizing he's just a radio troll, again. Not interested in the garbage, he was just saying what was on my mind watching the game and how I still feel today. He honestly sounds like a guy I'd love to punch in the face.
Honestly he sounds the same as before, which is an amplified version of the typical posters here or the callers to those stations. Nothing groundbreaking. Like he's really going to get a rise out of people by calling UH a feeder school, might as well chirp "Houston you have a problem!" right afterwards.
Sad to see Charlie go. Been listening to him for 20+ years. Maybe he'll be signed to another local station... there are options.
Josh Innes plans to take his radio show in a different direction from Charlie Pallilo's Spoiler Radio is a tough business. Charlie Pallilo has been a sports talk host on the Houston dial for more than 25 years. He is regarded as a walking encyclopedia of sports, the button you push for straightforward information, facts, figures and opinions. In a business that occasionally employs odd sorts, Pallilo has never done anything to embarrass his station, KBME (SportsTalk 790 AM). The people that listen to him … respect and really, really like him. I'll say this up front - I am a Pallilo fan and friend. When people ask me what he's like "in real life," I tell them, "If I had Charlie's devotion to his job, I'd be publisher of the New York Times by now." A few years ago, I finished a book, I think it was a Ted Williams biography, and offered it to Pallilo. He said, "I'll put it on bottom of the books I'm planning to read this summer. It's number seven." He schedules his reading list months in advance. The radio show always came first with Pallilo. He is still the kid who memorizes the backs of baseball cards. He goes to local games (some sports hosts don't). While he's at Minute Maid Park, he's taping other games at home. Sometimes I'll tell him, "You won't believe what happened when … ." And he'll shut me down, "Don't tell me who won. I taped it, and I'm going to watch in the morning." Last week, KBME bosses pulled Pallilo off the air. Gonzo. Just like that. That's radio. Jimmy Buffett has a song called "I Don't Know and I Don't Care." He's got a line in there. "I got a PBS mind in an MTV world." That's Pallilo and radio today. It's unfair to criticize KBME for saying goodbye to Pallilo. It's business. And Pallilo's rating between 3-7 p.m. trailed his primary rival show, "The Triple Threat" with Sean Pendergast, Ted Johnson and Rich Lord on KILT (SportsRadio 610 AM). What doomed Pallilo: PBS is a nonprofit business. KBME is trying to avoid becoming one. For the record, Pallilo had a substantial list of advertisers who specifically asked for him to be their spokesman. As Hyman Roth tells Michael Corleone in "Godfather II" … "this is the business we've chosen." Pallilo's fans erupted on Twitter and in the comments section at the bottom of Chronicle sports columnist David Barron's story about Pallilo. It seemed like every one of Pallilo's listeners was furious at KBME. Many threatened never to listen to the station again and hoped for Pallilo to find another radio home in Houston. I can tell you that Pallilo has talked with at least one other Houston station. The station asked me for Pallilo's phone number. There's always a place for smart. KBME sent Pallilo fans into orbit when the station announced who it hired to replaced Pallilo - Josh Innes. Controversial, naughty, loudmouth Josh Innes, who worked in Houston from 2009-2013 on KILT, most of that time co-hosting the afternoon drive slot with Rich Lord. Although they were a ratings success, let's just say they didn't get along. Now Innes and Lord are going head-to-head from 3-7 p.m, although Lord's show gets a head start at 2 p.m. It could be an old-fashioned radio war - but probably a one-way firestorm. Typically, the lower-rated show takes shots at the higher-rated show (it's called punching up), but the higher-rated show doesn't respond. After leaving Houston, Innes hosted a show on powerhouse station WIP in Philadelphia. He was let go after doing some racially charged material. "Are you going to do the same kind of show on KBME that got you in hot water in Philadelphia?" I asked Innes. He asked, "What kind of a show do you think I do?" I said, "The perception is that you're a loudmouth who says outrageous things and you push the boundary of sexual and racial material." Innes said, "I don't do much sexual material. Millennials have the internet for that. Yes, I do racial material, and I may not be politically correct. But it's unfair to pull out one sentence that I said without hearing it in context of the show. I shouldn't say I won't do any sexual material, because guys do talk about hot chicks. I'm just not dependent on it." The biggest difference in the show he did with Lord on KILT and his new show on KBME: "This time I'll essentially be hosting by myself. It will be my voice. When I was at KILT, there were people who were hoping I failed, who set me up as the bad guy so they could be the good guy. That won't happen this time" Can we expect a declaration of radio war against his former station? "I won't go out of my way to do that, but if it happens, it happens," Innes said. As a sports talk listener, fingers crossed that it happens.
I decided to listen to Innes' show at work today and give it a chance. I listened to it on and off for about 2 hours. Most of what I heard was railing on 610, making fun of Pallilo, Rich Lord, etc., and Night Ranger vs. Loverboy. Apparently he's trying to raise What cracked me up a bit was when he said apparently he was told nobody from the Rockets wanted to do a show with him and also that the Texans hated him, so ...hmm. I can't say I really found anything enjoyable about the show, and I really didn't like it when he was going at the guy that just got canned. Not because I'm a Pallilo fan, but more because... it's so damn tacky. I'll give the show another shot tomorrow if I get the chance, but so far, it's not my cup of tea -- especially if most of his material revolves around insulting others in the city.
The bit I heard he also had a real go at his former employers at 610. I am not sure if this is how the radio business goes but it comes off as extremely classless to go off big time on your former employer and your predecessor. Well classless and Josh Anus is a match
Man, radio in the afternoon is gonna suck. I like Sean on 610, but every time I seem to listen to 610 afternoon, it ends up being Texans all access with Mark VanderBrock or the sideline guy. I turned my radio off today driving away from work. I checked Twitter to see what's going on. Clanton needs to leave the midday show, cause his tweet seems to be buttering up to innes. Also, I like how he proclaims to be politically neutral, yet he's such a big honk now on the right side. Sports radio in Houston is so dead. 790 whores them selves out.
More than anything, I hate the voice of Innes' producer/cohost. I've heard him on 610 on the weekends in the past. Wtf type of voice is that? Lol
I had the same thoughts. I guess for his first show I will give him a pass since he was basically laying out his mission plan and what he is up against. But if it becomes a daily occurrence I'll probably won't listen very long. He said he might be able to get Calvin Murphy on the show. That might be pretty cool.
I didn't listen, but this sounds about right. Sounds like he's picking up right where he left off. For those who don't know what to expect, just read DoD's description above and that's pretty much his daily shtick in a nutshell.
So, 790 have brought back a nearly universally hated personality for their afternoon drive show...who can't get an interview with any of the local professional teams...even the ones on 790. Sounds like a great business decision.
His ratings will probably soar for the next few weeks just as people tune him in to check out what all the fuss is about. But, just like the smell of a gigantic egg salad fart, they will dissipate to nothing soon after the initial explosion.
They have no clue what they're doing or how to measure value. I'm curious to see what all the advertisers who preferred Charlie ended up doing.... wouldn't be surprised if Innes not only suffers from a ratings standpoint but also from ad revenue.
Innes is correct that ultimately it is a ratings game. However, going from "PBS" baseball analysis to "MTV" troll radio is not going to be an easy transition. A direct assault on 610 is funny, but also goes against a lot of the unwritten decorum of Houston sports radio. 610 will do what they always do: keep talking about football and not giving a **** what anyone else has to say. I think I will just start listening to NPR.
