With the exception of the Pope (lol) I am pretty sure at least 1 of those names mentioned has smoked. If I was in the NBA I wouldn't make an effort to appease people worried about their children. I don't care about your children, I don't like children, I refuse to change my lifestyle for children I will never meet, take care of your own children, my job would be to play basketball, not raise your kids.
YOU don't care, but the "NBA Cares". Why do you think the NBA has its players doing all these charitable work? Do you think all of them absolutely love doing these things? It's to please the fans. And most fans love their kids. How would it be like if you're an NBA player, go to a school to talk to them about studying hard, not joining gangs, blah blah and then you go light a blunt? Kids are easily influenced. Do you want your son to grow up doing drugs? Maybe you do, but I'm sure most people don't. I don't know how true this is, but someone told me that smoking weed fries your brain cells and eventually kill them? Is this why it's illegal? Because you can't grow back brain cells. So slowly you become stupider the more you smoke?
If that was true, would California have Medical mar1juana available? It has more positives than negative. Studies have been done that show mar1juana is not cancerous. The whole brain cells myth is probably the biggest misconceptions about weed. One of the major reason Its illegal because the government can't make max money off of it. Any average joe can grow their own weed instead of buying it from the store. If it was easy to brew your own alcohol, do you think it still would be legal? You act like Josh Howard came out and told kids they should smoke weed because it makes you play better. All he said was he smoked in the offseason. He didn't advocate it or advertise it like a beer commercial.

Being totally objective. The only side-effect of mar1juana is that it could alter memory formation for a short period of time. But it also have many positive effects including reduce pain sensitivity, protection from excitotoxic brain damage, and reduce depression. Those are straight out of a neurobehavioral science textbook. I'm not making it up.
You are right about one thing, and that is that the NBA cares about the reputation of it's product (ie. the players). They work hard to fight off the stereotypes you mentioned, and Josh Howard didn't help with his comments. But COME ON. If your kid lights a blunt because Josh Howard talked about it, then you have some parenting to work on. Josh didn't tell the kids at the schools anything different, nor should his charity be cheapened by an irrelevant, albeit irresponsible decision. The absolute worst thing about mar1juana (besides illegality) is that it induces apathy. I smoked daily for years, and I can honestly say the only health effects I incurred were apathy and complacency. It is really sad to see the same people I smoked with, still sitting around doing nothing and with no real plans to do anything. It's a waste, but it's not malicious. It doesn't RUIN your life. Abuse of Cocaine, Heroin, Oxycontin, Xanax, and MDMA (to name a few of the truly threatening 'recreational' drugs that I've seen people have problems with) will seriously alter your personality and brain chemistry, and run your life into the ground. If your kids end up smoking, it would not be the WORST thing that could happen to them. Nobody 'wants their kids to grow up doing drugs' like you suggested, but if all they do is get stoned then Dad would probably never know a thing. It is possible to smoke weed AND study hard, not join gangs, or get addicted to Methamphetamine.
I bet the mavs all smoked it in Game 7, 2005. Otherwise, how can they were all so high in that game?! We lost to pot!
I just found this information on yahoo.com. I'm not a science person, but if mar1juana is so good then why is the use of it a reason for transplant rejection? Maybe the surgeons know something about weed that we don't? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080426/ap_on_re_us/medical_marijuana_transplants To everyone who thinks I'm wrong: Do you let your kids smoke? It's harmless right? It aides in studying right? "Good job Bob on your test today. Here, blaze with dad." To keynote32: I remember David Stern said something like the players wore suites when they were drafted. So why did Iverson wear a suite when he was drafted? And the list you put, where did you get it or did you arrange the list? To shipwreck: Can you monitor your kids 24/7? Growing up, I hardly saw my mom because she worked after I went to school and came home after I went to bed. She worked weekeneds too. I could have gotten so high at such a young age behind her back. To Angkor Wat: Josh Howard didn't advertise himself smoking weed because he knew it's a bad thing. That's why he confessed, but not bragged. TV and internet are so influential these days. Celebrities should have higher standards than the common people. If a kid finds out that his favorite athlete smokes weed, then he'll think it's right for him to do so too. But since it's illegal, he'll try to sneak it and maybe get in trouble with the law.
1, Because David Stern told him too....... 2, Who cares? "If a kid finds out that his favorite athlete smokes weed, then he'll think it's right for him to do so too. " I strongly, strongly disagree..... If your kid is that impressionable and stupid, then it is the parents fault...
Yeah. I'm a programmer. I'm a little pissed off when I hear term "brilliant code" and I'm pretty sure that their code would also compile without them smokin' weed. Well, what I meant to say is that it also makes you clueless in longterm. Clueless and careless. ------------------ Don't take it on board Don't fall on your sword Just play another chord If you feel you're getting bored I feel numb I feel numb Too much is not enough I feel numb Don't change your brand Gimme what you got Don't listen to the band Don't gape Gimme what I don't get Don't ape Don't change your shape Gimme some more Have another grape Too much is not enough I feel numb I feel numb ------------------
Sorry, I'd be more worried about who your kids hang out with rather than what athletes he looks up to. Josh Howard won't be the one telling your kid to steal from the gas station, he won't be the making him snort lines and he definitely won't be the guy forcing the blunt to his lip. The people he hangs around with will have more of an impact on his life than any athlete. Your kid can look up to Collin Powell and Condeleza Rice (LOL) all he wants. But neither Colin or Condeleza will be there when your kid is in middle school or high school trying to "fit it" with the other kids. Honestly, I don't think your giving kids enough credit. They're not that stupid. Everything starts with good parenting. If he doesn't have that, then Josh Howard would be the least of your worries.
