For those of you who did not see him, or see him in his prime. Jeff Bagwell was basically Yordan Alvarez's bat with Alex Bregman's aggressive style of defense, eye and plate discipline, Kyle Tucker's baserunning, and Yuli Gurriel's 1B mitt. SO FAR Altuve is on pace, but it's a tall hill to climb.
Leadoff runners, no outs Astros need 3 runs here..... make mincemeat of the MMP curse. Wrong thread, but to keep the vibe...
I thought this may be a good place to post this. 16 position players have had at least 2.0+ bWAR in 5 or more seasons for the Astros. 14) Bagwell, Biggio 12) Cruz 10) Berkman 9) C.Cedeno, Altuve 8) Wynn 7) Bregman, Morgan, Doran, Springer 6) Correa, Puhl, Watson 5) Bass, Pence. From those 16 the best 5 seasons 1) Bagwell 37.1 2) Biggio 32.8 3) Altuve 31.3 4) Wynn 31.2 5) Berkman 30.7 6) C Cedeno 30.2 7) Bregman 30.1 (includes 2023) 8) Correa 29.4 9) Cruz 27.4 10) Morgan 23.7 11) Springer 23.6 (includes 2020) 12) Doran 22.4 13) Puhl 19.8 14) Watson 18.7 15) Pence 16.2 16) Bass 15.5
Altuve as the most prominent Astro of the era gets an unfair amount of blame for the trashcan scandal even though most evidence shows he had nothing to do with it. Many still believe he was wearing a buzzer under his shirt in 2019. it will be an injustice if rumor and innuendo Keep him out of the Hall of Fame. Unfortunate we live in a world where rumor and innuendo Can carry a lot of weight.
There are a lot of cheaters who are not in the Hall of Fame and are not ever likely to be. So it could go either way, but the anti-Altuve sentiment is strong. To think the voters will look past what happened in conjunction with an unforgiving public sentiment may be naive. Add to that nobody felt justice was served and still should be. And you have what appears to be a mathematical equation with a result that doesn't look too favorable.
I don't believe the anti-Altuve sentiment is strong among the BBWAA, though - and when it comes to the HoF, that's really all that matters. So I do think it'll be an issue, of course - but I no longer think it'll be an issue that keeps him out of the Hall of Fame. Having said that, he's not in, yet. And that's the thing: he can't be borderline. He has to have a no-doubt, first-ballot-like resume. Hitting one or two significant milestones (another MVP; 3K hits...) would really start to strengthen his case. And another ring - in which he plays well - would help, too.
Congrats on 100 postseason games, Jose. And plenty more to come before the sun sets on his career - 8× All-Star (2012, 2014–2018, 2021, 2022) - 2× World Series champion (2017, 2022) - AL MVP (2017) - ALCS MVP (2019) - 6× Silver Slugger (2014–2018, 2022)
The hatred of Jose Altuve is out of hand. He didn’t participate in the trash cans and this buzzer stuff was never proven. Yet my social Media other than Clutchfans this morining is full of how him being second in post season homeruns is tainted and they somehow he and the Stros are cheating in Globe Life Stadium.
In September I said it was still Biggio, but Altuve was going to pass him before he was done. I didn’t think it would be this soon
