Hill has a lot to work on, but he was a great offensive rebounder in the 47 games he played last year. For the Rockets, the team shot a much lower effective FG percentage and gave up a lot higher percentage with him in the game. That said, the Rockets got enough 2nd chance points from Jordan Hill's rebounding to more than nullify the ills of having him on the court. Hill is one of the best offensive rebounders in the league. He basically turns the Rockets from an average offensive rebounding team to a top three offensive rebounding team. He didn't really affect the Rocket's team defensive rebounding for good or bad (+0.02%). The Knicks were worse with him at defenisive rebounding, but that could be because he didn't play many minutes with another rebounder. Knicks were still a better rebounding team with him in game. It will be interesting to see how Hill and Yao work together. Yao's offense should negate the negative effect Hill has on FG% as defenses probably will guard Yao the same regardless of Hill being on the court or not. Hill's offensive rebounding shouldn't be impacted too much by Yao as Yao doesn't really crash the boards and his man is generally concerned about boxing out Yao. Yao generally controls defensive boards so Hill's weakness isn't that exposed and Hill is generally better at getting the longer rebounds that Yao misses.
Offensively, Patterson is miles ahead of Hill. You can just tell from the way Patterson moves. Patterson moves wihtout hesitation and seems to know instinctly what he's supposed to be doing and what position he's supposed to be in. Morey's team did a great job scouting him. Patterson is really quite well-rounded and shows an ability to play with many talented players as he demonstrated his skills all in one game: rolling to the basket for the put in, setting screens, running on the break, where to go on the floor for the pick and pop, accuracy from long distance including the 3. Patterson looks pretty strong and athletic to me. I don't know how he'll fare against NBA competition though, especially on the defensive end. Patterson looks raw offensively. But, he is very athletic. I think he did pretty well last year because he's good at providing energy and rebounding. Playing defense from the center is very difficult and involved so it's going to take a lot. His difficulties right now stem more from not being familiar with reading the offenses and just learning the position. If he can figure it out, his defense would be a real asset. With his hops and athleticism, he can cover a lot of ground. Offensively, I think Patterson would make more of an impact right away as he looks like he's already quite polished and unsterdands where to be on the court and how to play with his teammates. I can see him working very well with Yao because not only can he shoot but he also knows when to roll to the basket. He'd also work pretty well in the running game with Brooks and company. Hill may be raw, but what he does well can be used right now...such as rebounding. I don't think he'll be able to catch up to Patterson offensively, but he does have an edge in terms of athleticism. If he doesn't want to be supplanted by Patterson, he better carve a niche out defensively.
Don't have the edit function...but second paragrpah above... I meant to say "Hill looks very raw offensively."
Jordan Hill or Patrick Patterson? If you were DM and had to choose between keeping Jordan Hill or Patrick Patterson in a trade, who would you rather keep on the Rockets? Im going to say Patrick Patterson, just because of how excited the Rockets were to land him. What do you guys think?
Hasn't this been asked for? We've given no indications that we're dealing either of them and they're both too young to make any sort of determination. I refuse to answer your poll, sir, and I bid you good day.
Jordan hill looked like a studd there during last season. If he can continue to improve, he will be quite a force.
It's intriguing, actually. Hill has the better physical body, but Patterson is better between the ears. Hill obviously has a higher ceiling, but Patterson is more likely to hit his ceiling than Hill is because of his intelligence (not saying Hill is stupid, but PP is just one of those IQ players like Budinger). I'm going to have to go with Patterson over Hill. Hill has the body type and the potential to be good, but things like that aren't usually realized. Patterson, on the other hand, has the physical structure to be good as well (though not quite as blessed), but is much, MUCH more likely to realize his potential than Hill in the same way that Budinger is likely to as well.
Jordan Hill, he has the height, length, athleticism(quick leaping ability and vertical quickness), and great shooting mechanics! So I'm going with Jordan Hill! --RB
Gonna wait for PP to play a few games, or maybe even half a season before I sing his praises. Perfectly good thread considering possible trades, but a little early to try and honestly compare the two. Can't wait for the season or at least full practices to start....
it is also my impression from the last season. jordan doesn't have any smooth move. his moves look like being cut into pieces and you just pick a few of them and glue them together. he intends to put ball on floor before he makes moves. it will give defenders time to block his shots. on the defense end, he is not strong enough to hold his position so he is a good weakside defender due to his athletism.
