that's a good point about Bush Jr and Dad and Bill and that woman being more alike than the rank and file dems and reps. That's something to think about...
B-Bob - great article and I love the questions. I have been trying to figure out what questions I would ask to try to get what I wanted out of him. In general - from what I recall history has shown that most Chief Justices have come from the outside and not been promoted from within. Also, weren't there some SC justices in the past that had no judge experience at all? I think that is the case. Also in general - these types of sessions are always evasive. It is silly to think otherwise. That is why you can't go in expecting to hear real legal talk. The beauty is in the dance. Al Gonzalez, in my opinion, was horrible in his hearing. He was evasive but also came accross as shifty and negative. I have no idea what kind of SC judge or Chief Justice Roberts will make. Legally he is very qualified. He is trying to show himself as neutral when evaluating the law but that is ridiculous. No human can do that. I wish we as a society could be more honest about that. One of the Repub senators made a comment that I agree about. Roberts was nominated under a conservative president so he of course will be conservative. If he gets shot down Bush will nominate another conservative judge. There is no way to get around that. More, I have a feeling that the next judge nominated will be more conservative than Roberts (if he shockingly gets rejected, then Democrats are almost forced to vote "yes" for the next person so as not to look impossible and if he does go through, then Bush can afford to be a little more bold with his second selection. So given that and that people in this position don't ever really answer anything all i can do is judge him on more superficial standards. So far, I like him in that context. glynch - you act as if our system is new. It is not. It has always been pretty much a given that the person the prez nominates will go through and that the american people really have no say in the matter. I know there was a fairly recent example of a man who didn't get through because he looked so bad on television and there was such a public backlash the senators didn't want to risk their next election. That, however, is rare. Also keep in mind that public hearings are still a fairly recent thing. This process has never been about the American people.
[ASIDE (aside)] only three of the 16 men to have held the job of CJOTUS were promoted from within the court. at least two had no prior judicial experience.[/ASIDE]
When you can be brutally honest as a politician. Honesty is first and above everything else. When people don't have to wonder about who you are, what you stand for and they know that they can talk to you about any difference they may have with you and you will show them attention and respect. When you can admit your mistakes, take responsibility and apologize for each and every one without getting silenced by the other politicians. When you don't have to hide things from people as if they are dumb or won't understand. When you can make every effort to listen to EVERY single one of your constituents and discuss their issues personally and intelligently. When you care enough about your district to walk the streets and know the people as part of your family. Get involved with them and know them. When you can answer questions the average person has about our government and increase communication, understanding and trust. When you can try your best to treat ever group equally and justly without partiality and use criticism for self examination instead of defending yourself. When you can ignore the party line and do what is best for the country and the citizens without being blackballed by the ruling elite. When you can keep your promises no matter what else it costs you. When you can look every citizen in the eye and you know in your heart you haven't lied, deceived or ignored anything that is meaningful. When you can be open to opposing views and bring the root problems up for solutions and do it in a manner that wins the respect of both sides. When you can be a politician and go to sleep at night knowing you have been honest, you made the best decision for people and you cared for them from your heart; and you have peace of mind and sleep easy. All that for starters and I would join the fray. If I couldn't aspire to these ideals in the church I wouldn't be a pastor.
Hopefully there is not another Brownie in the make. I am sure he was very smart and behaving well during job interviews as well. We already saw examples of how dangerous it could be to put inexperienced people in very important positions. Damn, I still don't understand why every job interview I went to, they asked me about related working experience. Why didn't they fall for my manner or IQ test result?
I'm actually surprised that someone like youself was able spell it correctly. Especially considering it's a French derivation. I'm guessing you must have a Webster's sitting close to the keyboard for such posting occasions.
I chose the word imbeciles because it was a befitting term to people that are harsh on Roberts for being “evasive”. This is a character survey in which he and every other appointee for this position is strictly forbidden to indicate which way he would judge on any case that is even remotely going on at the Supreme or immediate sub-Supreme level. He simply can’t. And as far as “someone like yourself” I guess you are inferring that I because I am a Republican I am a Toby Keith-esque fool. I hope you know that I don’t care. I am a fool.
Nah, you don't need Webster's. It not the best software around, but I just keep a "create message" window from Outlook handy when I'm posting, and check the spelling there on a word I'm uncertain of. Just copy and paste. Very quick and easy. Of course, they don't recognize every word! I'm just addressing the spelling. I'm a lousy speller, myself. Keep D&D Civil!!
brown may have been inexperienced when he took the job, but by the time katrina hit he'd gone through at least 4 previous storms.
Thanks, I'll look into it. Anything that makes it easier, as long as it doesn't take up too much memory, would be cool. Keep D&D Civil!!
Who thinks that is a good, acceptable standard? Why is it allowed? Oh, yeah... there weren't so many lawyers in the 18th century!?!
Strictly forbidden? Where do you come up with this crap you keep posting? He is being evasive about his opinion and interpretation on previous court precedent and already established law. Not cases that are going on as you imply. He is being evasive about explaining his own already stated views in memos and writeups that he himself authored. Think about the nonsense you post before shelling out names and insults to other posters. At least attempt to first make a cogent argument before proclaiming everyone around you an idiot.
I guess I should pick a source other than teh American Bar Association’s Code of Judicial Conduct; nominees “shall not make ... statements that commit or appear to commit the candidate with respect to cases, controversies or issues that are likely to come before the court.” This is a witch hunt by the Democrats. Actually, it's a snipe hunt. The guy is an honest man from what I have seen. I should point out that I am glad they are prying as much as they are.
Roberts = Rehnquist part deux. I'm not that concerned about this guy. It's the cat they dig up to replace O'Connor that I am worried about...
[The American Bar Association (ABA) is a voluntary bar association of lawyers which is not specific to any jurisdiction in the United States. The ABA's most important non-controversial activities are the setting of academic standards for law schools, and the formulation of model legal codes....] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bar_Association Now you posted "strictly forbidden." Forbidden by who or what authority? What is the punishment or typical prison term and/or fine for violating these strict statutes of forbidden-ment? Please elaborate so that the forum will not have to continue assuming that you were talking out of your ass.
