If we let Landry go to Europe will we still have the
rights (hold) on him? If so for how long?

The way that I understand it, is even if he plays somewhere else, we retain his rights to the NBA as long as he plays. Correct? Much like Scola played for 5 years in Europe but the Spurs retained his rights.

Correct. As long as he is getting paid for basketball, we have his rights. He would have to sit out of all BB a year to be a free agent.

As long as we don't sign Landry than cut him, we have his rights for a while.

Now Landry could go on the NDBL on his own (or Europe, or Asia, or another North American smaller pro league) and not cost us a roster spot. If signed and assigned to the NDBL, he does count towards the 15 even though he is inactive for the NBA.

Right now it makes a lot more sense not to sign him, both for trade purposes and flexibility with the 15 man roster.

That sounds good for the Rockets and bad for Landry. Anyone know how long draft rights are good for?

Actually, according to Larry Coon's FAQ, the Rockets would own Landry's rights for (a) one year (until next year's draft) if he doesn't sign overseas; or (b) if he signs overseas, until one year AFTER his overseas contract expires.

I have not found anything about being overseas, just playing in a non-NBA league. As long as Landry plays professional BB, I think we have his rights, he would have to sit out of basketball 1 year. He can go to the NDBL or another North American league or Europe/Asia, and I believe and we still have his rights. The best money of course outside of the NBA is Europe--but he could stay in the US if he wanted.

Now we just can't sign him and then waive him (then we lose his rights), or sign him and assign him to the NDBL without giving him one of the 15 spots.

I think they will do whatever they think is best for the organiztion. If I was Landry, and they tried that, he might think about signing an NBDL contract and then being a complete Free Agent the next year.

LOL! What about Tyson Chandler, David West, Peja Stojakovic, and Mo Peterson to go along with Chris Paul?

This is not the rule as best I can tell (seem my post above).

If he signs on his own in Europe or the NBDL or any other pay league we own his rights for year post his last contract.

He would have to sit out of professional bb a year to be a NBA free agent.

all landry has to do is go to camp...the rockets then have to keep him or cut him...if they keep him, even if hes sent to the d league, he is paid the nba minimum. if they cut him, he has all options...another team in the nba, europe or the d league because he would be a free agent.
