The reconquista group may be out there, but not in any numbers larger than a boyscout troop. Yes, those folks aren't believers in the melting pot theory. They also don't have prayer of reaching their goals, aren't widely supported. In addition they aren't given high paying jobs by FOX NEWS, where they can routinely voice their racist views. The birthrate stuff is a fact. I agree. Who cares? Why does it matter to you if in 25 years the majority of the population is hispanic? What matters is that the majority of the population is American. Contrary to what Gibson thinks, both can be possible. If we were to believe that everyone from every race in the U.S. is truly equal and has the same opportunities, then it won't matter what the majority race in the nation is. Your neighbor from Pasadena was probably just making an ignorant, unfunny joke. I live in Los Angeles, and have no problem speaking English. I didn't see any demonstrations where American Flags were burned in the shadow of American flags. There were some where Mexican flags were flown as well as American flags. No counties in the nation have public schools where there are exclusively Spanish speaking public schools. There are none, let alone many as you claim. The fact of the matter is that a few begin teaching in both languages and eventually taper off the Spanish instruction as the students learn English. Eventually it is all in English. Even if that was different it wouldn't matter. 100-150 years ago there were schools in Texas that taught exclusively in German. What difference did that make. The country survived and it didn't turn into New Germany.
Because you tried to rationalize the racist comments made by Juan Gibson who is afraid of HISPANICS becoming the majority. Not immigrants, not mexicans, but HISPANICS. Or were you just trying to derail the topic ?
Do you really think that the "Recoquista" movement matters? I mean, it won't EVER actually happen, it is supported by very few people, so why take it seriously? They will never completely legitimize all of those illegal immigrants, they MIGHT make it easier to track them and to collect taxes from them, but they'll never be able to vote for instance. If anyone burned American flags they were told that that wasn't the right way to do things, the final protest people wore white shirts and pretty much replaced every Mexican flag with one of the US. The population of the US is close to 300 million, I think there's around 40 million hispanic people in the country, not even close to a majority, why are white people so scared about a birth rate? What difference does it make if they have to support ESL? They need those programs to teach English. Destroy? Are you kidding me? Do you honestly believe that a very small minority group of people within another minority group can DESTROY a nation? They don't make a difference in the Hispanic community much less America, the only reason such a big deal is made of them is because they want people to believe that everyONE of them is against this country. Plain and simple, your opinion has been manipulated.
Personally I can't wait until us WASPs become the minority in America! Might just teach us a little humility!
Why is "rationalize" such a loaded word? There might be some completely rational thought behind this. I couldn't find the video link; it has "moved on" apparently. I don't know what the tone of this comment was; could it have been a mocking exasperation? I think that people (with all their limitations) are good at heart. Of course there are exceptions. I don't see the point of ridiculing and mocking people who express an opinion different from mine. Isn't it better to try and understand the motivation and understanding that lies beneath? All the critics here just assume that Gibson is some hateful fellow. I doubt that. I don't even watch the guy and I certainly don't know him.
No, not kidding. You may dismiss it if you want, but what have we seen in the last month: the striking of the adjective "illegal" to describe the immigrants in question, the burning of American flags by some of those supporting these illegal immigrants, the Reconquista movements (what was that thing that Confucius said?), and the Mexican support of illegal emigrants to the US. This group is making little effort to "melt in" to the US population. They demand specialized services. They break laws and request and expect immunity. The burden the local communities for healthcare and school support. They don't do any work for me that I know of-- unless some of these folks are washing dishes at our local Mexican restaurant. BTW, the owner/manager of said restaurant lives on my street. He has a new baby; I took my girls down there on our bikes the other day to meet her. How neighborly!
I am not saying Gibson is hateful, just ignorantly fearful with a distorted and immoral view of what America is. I have seen the video. He wasn't mocking. He is a man scared of not having a white America, and his word choice shows that he believes America not to be a melting pot, but a white America.
There is literally a group of people out there who still believe the Earth is flat. There really is. They are just as significant as the Reconquistas. That is to say none at all. Neither group has the slightest impact on anything we do. Calling immigrants whithout documentation or with documentation illegal or not illegal also has little real impact. To say they don't do any work for you is unlikely. Unless you grow all of your own produce, don't wear any clothes made in the U.S., don't buy any food from grocery stores packaged in the U.S. then odds are they do work for you. As far as flag burning, if it did exist it was done by a tiny tiny group of people out of the many hundreds of thousands that did protest. Also you are confusing two seperate issues. You are confusing illegal immigration with a hispanic majority in the U.S. Again Gibson is saying that we need to prevent a hispanic majority in the U.S. Why? What is he afraid of? Do you agree with that sentiment?
So your experience has led you to believe in these broad generalizations and using the word "we" when you're no doubt speaking for just yourself......granted you have a valid arguement when it comes to illegal immigration, but you jump the shark big time with your obsession with the flag burning(video please) and the Reconquista movement (delusional at best).
What is that supposed to mean? You can still say they're illegal immigrants if you want, can't you? This isn't important. I haven't seen this, but I imagine that just like the looting in New Orleans they'll show you the same flag burning over and over again to get you to think that it's happening a lot, and again, during the final protests Mexican flags were left at home, replaced by US flags. They're not going to take away the southern states, this movement will never even get off the ground, use some common sense and stop worrying. If this group exists it's a small and irrelevant group of people... The irrelevant demands will not be met or considered... They won't get immunity... They do not burden you or anyone else, not enough people, again, use some common sense and stop worrying. Technically, some do, at least in an indirect way... Why are you so scared?
Way too much of the conversation about this has been about "immigration" when the real issue has been "illegal immigration." Big difference. Who knows what the truth is. I'm just reporting what I saw on the news. I don't know how to calculate what percentage of what was what. We rely on the news media for accuracy and they are into "ratings." Who says I'm worried? I am just recognizing it as a factor that is out there. I think there is some confusion here. The common estimate is 11 Million illegal immigrants who are taxing our system. Why do you think I'm scared?
Gibson's comments weren't about illegal immigration. It is about hispanics becoming the majority in the United States, and Gibson saying that 'We' need to have babies. His 'We' included whites but excluded other races. It shows what he believes America to be and that it should be preserved. The real issue is someone who believes that other races aren't really part of America. What is Gibson scared of? Do you support the idea that we need to keep a white majority in the United States?
I lived in NM for 5 years. NM is the first minority majority state. I spoke english the whole time, even when I was the only caucasian in a group. You just have to be considerate and willing to communicate with people that look and sound a little different. No big deal, though I doubt such skills are learned from llistening to Gibson. I travel all over NM and AZ as part of my job. I go to communities large and small. I work with people from small communities that have a direct ancestry back to the Spanish and I work with people whose ancestors were here before the Spanish and I work with guys like me. Nobody has mentioned this Reconquista Movement even in jest. Sounds like a straw man that Fox News has built up to scare the old white folks and young autocrats that watch. Reminds me of the evil "Humanist Manifesto" that proselytizing young Baptists used to try and scare people to Christ during my college years. In fact, according to David Neiwart, whose blog Orcinus is one of the best things on the web, the idea of Reconquista seems to have been manufactured with great fanfare by Michelle Malkin and some other extremist rightwing types from some questionable raw materials. Since Neiwart writes in detail, I'll just post the conclusion. Follow the link for the whole enchilada. http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2006/04/reconquista.html
