Hope Fetterman gets better soon, depression is no joke, it led my mother down a very very very dark path that changed my family's trajectory forever.
For those who don't know, when you have a stroke it cuts off part of your brain that you'll never get back. So the issue with depression is because the dopamine, and serotonin inhibitors often get blocked. That's why you can get serious depression. Medication for the rest of your life is often the case just to keep your chemicals balanced. Its a real issue with strokes many people don't realize.
Depression is definitely a serious illness. I'm glad that he is seeking help. Hopefully he will get all the help available and will be able to control it.
It is but in his case it’s more stroke related I’m sure. It’s actually concerning that his doctors did not have him on regulating medication after the stroke to begin with. I’m hoping he didn’t refuse them out of stigma that would have potentially been drug through the mud as a candidate by the tv doctor dude.
I’d like to say that not even the GOP would touch that, but then again, this is the crackpot qanon antivax party. /shrug
Shouldn’t be news. I imagine the campaign took its toll on him and lead to undiagnosed depression worsening.
He had a stroke. Strokes happen because either blood is restricted via a clot or a blood vessel burst in your brain. That leads to the area that either had a blood vessel burst or lost blood flow dying for good. That part of your brain is dead tissue essentially. During rehab you are essentially re-wiring your brain to have other parts of your brain take over control for the part that was lost. While the brain can work like a wiring circuit, the chemical secretion ducts cannot. Therefore it's essential for many stroke survivors to get on antidepressants to balance their chemical levels of ones such as dopamine. I know this because of a loved one that I've had to go through this experience with. I'm not a google neurologist or anything, but it's obvious to me that many people don't really understand what a stroke is or isn't. Fetterman I'm sure is going to be perfectly capable of being a good Senator. Having a stroke doesn't mean you suddenly turn into The Swamp Thing. You just had an injury that needs time and rehab to correct. Even during that process, you are still you, and still have the ability to do that particular job. If 150 year old Chuck Grassley and Diane Feinstein can be a Senator, a stroke survivor sure as hell can too. Does that still not make sense to you?
Typical GOP halftruths? Lol. You don’t need to be on that tribe when you see and hear someone who’s not fit for office. You guys just turned everything tribal. I’m not a fan but I do not wish bad things for him. Just barely a couple of months into his 6 years term, he’s facing health issues. The latest is clinical depression which typically associated with the aftermath of a stroke or a heart attack. Yeah..typical GOP halftruths!
That is interesting but from what I’m hearing reported is that he’s suffered from depression before so this might not be stroke related. Either way it’s certainly not something he should be stigmatized for or that he can’t do his job. Abraham Lincoln very likely suffered from what we would now call clinical depression. What was then referred to as “melancholy”. It didn’t stop him and he didn’t even have the treatments we now do.
All true - I’ve even read a book that makes a compelling argument that Lincoln’s depression made him an ideal leader for the crisis that was the Civil war. According to the book, people who are depressed tend to display more empathy and also tend to be more realistic in their assessment of problems. Both of these characteristics lend themselves to a wartime President. I’m doing a half-assed job relating the points of the book (it’s been 15+ years and my old brain isn’t what it used to be) but my point is that Fetterman’s depression is not at all a disqualifier for office.
Something serious is going on for him to be hospitalized for weeks -- MH is very important and it's important that they are being open about it, but I believe there is more to this story.
