An article like this about Dorsey at this time could mean the Rockets think HE is the backup to Yao that everyone realizes is needed. So don't be disappointed if they don't make much of a move to get another big for backing up Yao. The problem is, it is somewhat risky. He wouldn't be the first good college player that never has the success expected in the NBA. He hasn't played enough NBA games to determine whether or not he can be a reliable backup to Yao. The ideal player has the ability to see the whole court and has the knowledge and skill to react according to what is there. T-mac is gifted that way, although not always exercising it. If Dorsey can get beyond the Stromile Swift comparisons, maybe the Rockets have a diamond in the rough. Foot problems can be chronic. That is a major concern. The Rockets need more durable players. I'd hate to see a slot taken by someone who can't get on the court because of health issues. God knows, we've had enough of that.
Or it's the offseason and he's the only one hanging around working with the coaches. What else can Jason Friedman write about? Darryl Watkins?
so tell me, how are hayes and dorsey not different? Both have very limited offensive game and only good in playing D and grabbing some boards. Both are undersized pf, granted dorsey is a bit bigger and taller. i dont need to collect any facts, we all watch the same freakin games. But then, maybe you just so ignorant you hardly watch any of them play and assumed they got different game.
It would be nice if it worked out and he broke into our lineup, but we have some pretty good guys at the PF position. He could get thrown in as a backup for Yao, if we can’t get anyone else in the mix for that role, and Hayes & Scola are in foul trouble. (Scola did/ does play center on the international level and showed a little during the Lakers series) If Dorsey can break in the lineup his minutes would be really limited. The Rockets are also going after a legit backup center so I really doubt he will get significant playing time. As a footnote to all of Dorsey’s summer work: Didn’t Luther Head put in a lot of time last summer, working on his shot, defense and getting in better shape?
it is because i actually watch the games that I know you are totally wrong. i watched chuck play since he was at UK, and i watched joey play everytime memphis was on tv. chuck is not athletic, he's powerful, intelligent, and uses his knowledge of the game in order to play effective defense. he doesn't try to block shots, he doesn't finish effectively around the rim, he doesnt have good straight line foot speed, he doesn't jump, he rebounds through positioning, and his impact off the weakside is to collapse into the passing/driving lanes to get steals and rebounds. he is impossible to back down because despite his limited athleticism he has an incredibly strong lower body and knows how to use it effectively to prevent opposing post players from gaining an advantage. on the total opposite end of the spectrum you have joey. joey is extremely athletic for a big man, and he has a questionable understanding of the fundamentals of playing defense. he prefers to use his wingspan and jumping ability to block shots, whether playing on the post or coming in from the weakside. he has very good straight line foot speed, is a great leaper, is a very strong finisher aroudn the basket, and will often take a more difficult approach to the basket to dunk over someone rather than take an easy shot. he rebounds by outjumping people not outworking them, and he's not very skilled at understanding the team defense and rotating over on the weakside, unless it is to block a shot. he can be backed down because despite his impressive strength, he's not that good at using defensive leverage and understanding how the offensive player is trying to beat him. so, you have two players with a defensive reputation. that does NOT make them the same in any way, because they play completely differently and have different skillsets.
Being a clone of Carl Landry would not be too bad. Effort in rebounding and a bit of offense plus an average defense is all the team could ask for. Anything more is a bonus.
I wonder if any other clutchfans in HK are able to watch the vid. You are from Singapore, right? Sooner or later, us Hong Kongers must start a campaign to boycott nba.com.
