I watched that video at the end 2 or 3 times when I first heard it trying to make sure he wasn't talking about Daryl Morey, but it sounded like he was referring to a player.

I think others (OMR and someone who posted before him) was right, Darryl Finesse Watkins, a 6'11'' center who spent last year in China was the other tall guy and the guy Joey was talking about.

Right now, I am guessing they see some potential in Watkins (as a deep bench guy) and decided to take a free look in the summer. At the same time, it's for the players to have someone their own size and age to compete against. Respert and Sikma aren't going challeng Dorsey physically in their sessions.

I remember (maybe incorrectly?) that they had Daniel Santiago working out in Houston all offseason with the team one year-- but he ended up getting an European offer and the Rockets agreed to release him.

You know everyone keeps knocking up his bad offense. I thought we picked him up for defense? Deke wasnt an offensive player but he is praised. I can almost say Joey would bring the same defense as Deke and the same offense.

With all due respect, Deke was one of the best defensive centers of all time. Witnessed by game one against Portland, he still was capable of completely controlling the defensive end. If Dorsey ever plays as good as Deke did at the end of his career we will be lucky.

I hope he will do well, it was a surprise that he didn't do better after a good college career. He looks very strong and it seems like he is saying the right things now, more humble than he was last year.

Just wondering, how is it possible for a native speaker to say "it hurted so bad"?

Dorsey hasn't shown jack. Deke's offense was horrific, but his presence in the paint was just as awesome as his offense was bad. He was on of the best shot erasers this league's seen. Dorsey's defense is not anywhere near there from what the Rockets think it seems. Chuck Hayes is horrible on offense, but is at least solid-to-great on defense.

More than anything his seriousness and humbleness in the interview is what I noticed the most about this interview. He seemed a bit more egotistical last year in interviews I saw him - especially in that player intro press conference where Morey put him in his place. lol.

I'v noticed that Morey lays the smack down on Dorsey-- gently, but clearly-- every time somebody asks about him.

People who think Morey is just smart with numbers are sorely mistaken.

And I agree, Dorsey seems a lot more focused nowadays... being in a contract year (after next season, the remaining 2 years on his deal are team option) and watching your career slowly die probably does that to you.

Learn offense from Scola, learn defense from Hayes, sounds pretty good to me.
    good luck Joey

Good to see that kind of hard work and dedication in a young player. Joey definitely has the Rocket Spirit.

Also, here's some info on Daryl Watkins from nbadraft.net:

Sounds like he has some size and talent, but definitely not the mindset for this team. Who knows, maybe he's chnged mentally over the past two years, but I doubt it.

Maybe he could improve his FTs under the tutelage of Chuck Hayes. :D

Good to hear that he's using his summer to work with the coaches. I'm surprised more young players don't do this.

However, there's a good possibility that Morey will bring in a backup C for Yao this offseason. So unless we get rid of one of our big men, there won't be a lot of playing time available for Dorsey next season.

Anyways, it was a good read.

On what basis do you believe someone who has only played a handful of minutes in the NBA is the equal to a future HOF who is also one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game?

for what its worth, Dorsey was the best defensive center in the entire NCAA for 2 straight years. I don't think Mutombo is a good comparison for him - he's much more Ben Wallace than he is deke, as weve been saying ad nauseum. if you watched a lot of memphis games that year, you prolly noticed that opposing players seemed to be kinda . . . scared (for lack of a better word) of Joey. That's one of the things i like about him so much. he's not out to defend you respectfully like Chuck Hayes or Battier, he's out to beat the crap out of you and take your lunch money.

There are some people coming up that are much more deke-like coming out soon though, like Thabeet, or Varnado from Miss. St. for some reason they rarely pan out though.

That's it, Joey. Show off how hard you're working so that you can be our throw-in for the #2 pick. Memphis will be glad to have you back to sell a few more tickets.

Hey, if he remains a Rocket, I want him to do well. The guy was seriously athletic when healthy.

But here we have him being showcased all of a sudden, right before the draft?

I would have no problem at all if he becomes even Ben Wallace-lite. I would love to see him work his way into the rotation. The latest video makes me a little more optimistic but I still doubt he can do it. Again, I hope the guy proves me wrong in the worst way.
