NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
My favorite Dreessen memory was the Jacksonville game (at home), when we came out sluggish and were tied at 7 in the second half. The Jags blitzed Schaub on 3rd and goal and he basically threw up a lob pass on his way down. Looked like a sure INT to start the play, but Dreessen went over the top of the linebacker and just took it away for the score. Incredible play that turned the momentum of that game. Dreessen has a lot of guts, and I can't blame him for wanting to be TE1. I'm sure he'll do great in Denver.
Who ever the Texans have in charge of contract structure and overall cap management has some serious explaining to do. It's not like the contracts came out of nowhere. It seems as though there was no forward thinking at all from the Texans brass.
No, but the 2012 cap figure did come out of nowhere. Remember that whole lockout thing? Pretty much had GMs flying blind into the next CBA. Texans ran up against it more than most teams, but it's merely a question of would you have rather had Winston, Demeco, Daniels, etc leave 2 years ago when they b****ed about their contracts and got overpaid, or would you rather be shedding them now? I'd rather do it now. Dunta Robinson was the exception to that. Can you imagine if we had caved and paid him bank instead of waiting for Jo-Jo? We'd be totally f***ed. Most of the guys the Texans lost were UDFAs, late rounders, and waiver wire pickups that we turned into a decent pros. That is the epitome of running a good NFL franchise. Other guys are overpaying OUR former players now that we picked up for next to nothing. (Brisel, Allen, Dressen, etc.) Mario is the exception to that, but he's still being overpaid, unless he is literally the best defensive player in the NFL next year. We have not lost anyone that is irreplaceable. Almost everyone we've lost, we've got a good replacement groomed for (Reed, Butler, Casey/Graham, etc.). We are going to be in nice shape for years to come, pending these moves lead to the big resigns of 2013 we're obviously aiming for. Then once the cap jumps in 2014, the Texans will be a premier FA destination. I like the direction of this franchise. Our stock may look slightly depressed for 2013, but the 5+ year picture is incredibly bright.
not really. Texans can't afford to outbid teams considering where it's at now and where it needs to be next year...they have to have a good chunk available to resign Barwin and especialyl D. Brown who will get an absolute monster deal. Losing a quality backup TE sting a little, but the texans just cant get into a bidding war for a backup TE
Agree. They have badly mishandled the salary cap that much is obvious. What it means on the field, however, is anyone's guess at this point.
Indeed. The Texans were idiots to sign Manning and Joseph last year. If we didn't have Joseph right now, Dressen would still probably be on the team. The Texans need to realize that signing pro bowl shutdown corners are worthless when it results in your backup TEs getting poached.
Exactly. Plus, who says this was about money? He will be the full time starter in Denver and would have been a backup again if he stayed in Houston. Catching passes from Peyton Manning might have had something to do with it as well.
Dear Knee-Jerks, Chicken Littles and Loud Internet/Talk Radio Screamers, Please read DonnyMost's post. Then read it again. And one more time for good measure... Commit it to memory and then every time the Texans don't back a Brink's truck up to (insert name of free agent you've heard of here and OHMYGOD! WHY ARE THEY NOT SIGNING HIM, THEY'RE GOING TO LOSE 10 GAMES NEXT YEAR!!! BOB MCNAIR IS CHEAP!!!! etc., etc.), take solace in the non-signing not being near the big deal you think it is and the Texans are making the most out of a bad situation and are positioning themselves to not have to experience this in the future. Sincerely, Hey Now!'s Fragile Sanity
