Del Rio was a dirty player with Dallas and Minnesota and he'll have the Broncos with the same reputation as he did the Jaguars. He's just that kind of coach.
Your logic is a good defense if it holds up under scrutiny. However, freeze framing it shows that Mays actually gets to Schaub first. Mays cleary hits him first and is lunging up.
I dislike these obnoxious fans who accuse people of being homers about that hit. They would be angry too if it was their quarterback, too. But nooooo, it's perfectly legal in their eyes. They even accuse Schaub of lowering his head to get the helmet to helmet contact. Good job, NFL.
I don't think he was lunging up, but rather contact forced his head up. Penalty is obvious, as he clearly led with the helmet into Schaub's neck area and hit Schaub's helmet. He wasn't trying to tackle Schaub, but instead deliver a hard hit, and arguably to knock Schaub out of the game. 1 game suspension seems reasonable.
Contact makes his head go...up? He isn't quite launching, but he clearly is planting one foot to push himself into Schaub with his helmet and his arms aren't even close to Schaub when his helmet collides.
Fair and just punishment. I'm sure that punk ass Jack Del Rio told his defense to lay a hit or two on Schaub by whatever means necessary.
anyone want to dispute that he wasn't trying to spear Schaub? Looks like he's launching to me.. no hands either. He could have easily wrapped him up instead.
Whether intentional or not, I'm not sure. I'm leaning towards yes, given the game situation and the two roughing penalties in a row. Either way, it wasn't proper form tackling. He did not lower his head and he did not wrap up. Those things, coupled with a roughing penalty last game equals a warranted suspension, in my opinion. I was furious after the hit. I was literally screaming about having our defense go after Peyton to prove a point, beanball style. I was yelling that had that been Peyton, his career would have ended right then and there. I still halfway believe that.
I wonder what would have happened if Matt was knocked out...and that hit resulted in a concussion... I wonder if Manning survives that game...
The best part is when Charlie Palillo equates Brian Cushing's hit on Manning to Mays' hit on Schaub. Watch the two plays and there's nothing in common about them except the fact that they both drew 15yd penalties. Palillo's attempted impartiality here just comes off as ignorant East coast bias. The NFL did right to suspend Mays, but we'll see if it's really a deterrant. I doubt it.
Lol @ anyone who thinks that hit wasn't malicious. ND Kalu and Greg Koch were saying the same thing yesterday, they didn't see anything wrong with the hit. The .gif shows a lot. Dude could have easily wrapped up Schaub without launching into him like that. More than obvious the Broncos' intent to "send a message" after he was carving up their defense for 4 TD's. Should make things testy though if we meet them in the playoffs....
I tried to look as objectively as I possibly could. I'm willing to admit, and try to limit, some bias here. But the only two outcomes I can see from that play are: -- dude was launching into Shaub's head -- dude is a complete, unrecoverable, hopeless, incompetent dumbass who forgot to look where he's going in the middle of a football game. Yeah, I think it was a dirty hit.
[don't know if serious] It was probably his coach telling him to make that hit... he was probably celebrating... I want to see footage of that. "Hooray! He's out of the game! Good for us " - Del Rio (shades) EDIT: OHHHHH... I SEE IT, NOW. WHAT YOU DID THERE.
Schaub is lucky he did not get a concussion. 1 game suspension is light imo. Mays will do it again, no doubt. Gotta think that Peyton is also not a big fan of that hit, since opposing teams will retaliate against him. If Mays had just aim his hit for the rib cage instead, there would have been no flag and no suspension.
i'm trying to find where the other defender "ping pongs" off schaub to make the hit look vicious like koch says. That was all mays the other guy just grazes by. Koch should really be working in Green bay calling those guys 'r****ds'. (his word usage)
Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton has some strong opinions on Mays, who was suspended one game for a nasty hit Sunday on Houston quarterback Matt Schaub. Tarkenton thinks Mays’ suspension should be much longer. Adam SchefterVerified‏@AdamSchefter Fran Tarkenton said on Fox News that Broncos LB Joe Mays, who had a Van Gogh hit on Matt Schaub, "should have been suspended for one year."
In real time on television it didn't look as dirty because it was from the other direction and the other linebacker comes into focus so quickly that he obscures some of the play. We even had a poster in here echoing the argument that the other defender actually got to Schaub first and caused him to fall backwards which is why Mays hit him in the helmet. As I showed with the freeze frame and as the gif shows however, Mays gets there first, is planting on one foot to launch and has his arms out clearly not attempting to wrap up. I don't know if it was a "I want to hurt this guy" in the sense of real injury, but he definitely wanted to put the fear of the lord into Schaub. There's no doubt in my mind that he was launching at Schaub's chin. Too many people now think of intentional helmet to helmet as those plays where the defender drives his helmet into the side of the head of a player. A lot of helmet to helmet hits on QBs are the defender spearing up under the facemask. If they land it right it is brutal and can really cause a QB to play scared.
This suspension I agree with. His ear got ripped off man. And its only one game. This isnt a BS suspension like when Suh stepped over that one guy and got suspended.
