NFL suspends Joe Mays one game for hit on Matt Schaub

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 25, 2012, 2:20 PM EDT

Broncos linebacker Joe Mays has apologized for his vicious hit on Texans quarterback Matt Schaub on Sunday, but the NFL doesn’t think an apology is enough. And the league office doesn’t think a heavy fine is enough, either.

Instead, Mays has been suspended for one game for his helmet-to-helmet hit, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mays will appeal the suspension.

The hit was absolutely brutal, knocking Schaub’s helmet off and knocking off a piece of Schaub’s ear, too. Amazingly, Schaub only missed one play, which the Texans’ medical staff apparently felt was sufficient to be sure that Schaub hadn’t suffered a concussion.

Mays is a fifth-year player who has started all three games for the Broncos this season. Last week he was suspended $7,875 for a roughing the passer penalty on Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. When Mays drilled Schaub this week, the league office apparently decided that it would need a lot more than just a fine to get through to Mays that hits like that simply aren’t accepted in the NFL.

    Good.

Given the fact that he had a fine for roughing the passer last week a suspension was definitely deserved. Glad the league stepped up.

Should have been the rest of the season, but at least he got more than a meaningless fine.

I was watching the game at my parent's house, it took every fiber of my being to not unleash a 3 minute long profanity filled rant after that hit.

Nothing worse then when a player thinks playing dirty = tough guy status. Pathetic ass Broncos and fake tough Jack Del Rio need a Andre Johnson ass whooping.

Whatever amount of money and suspension is required to make sure Mays doesn't do it again, and that other players think twice before driving up with their helmet on a defenseless player, is fine with me.

Seriously, Schaub is tall and Mays is smaller. It took an active effort on his part to elevate to the level of Schaub's helmet just to prove his point. Now the NFL has proven theirs.

It's a good thing that last night's officials weren't officiating the Texans-Broncos game. They probably would have called offensive pass interference on Shaub's ear chunk, ejected him, and offered Mays a night with Schaub's mother.

Charlie P keeps saying that it wasn't a dirty hit. When you watch it on replay I don't see how you could argue that. Mays doesn't even try to wrap Schaub up with his arms, well aware that his helmet was going to do the hitting for him. His arms are out as his helmet slams into Schaub.

Originally I thought the one game suspension was too severe, I just heard about the earlier roughing passer fine that was placed on him. So I am guessing that played into it.

Exactly, why I don't believe the hit was malicious. You can see in the video Schaub was actually falling back because of another Bronco was coming straight toward him, Mays was coming from his side, had Schaub been standing straight up he would have hit him in the chest or shoulder but Mays was coming full speed and Schaub was falling back, there is no way he could have pulled away from the collision to not hit Schaub.

Now there is no doubt it was an illegal hit due to the helmet to helmet contact but I don't think it there was any more ill intent then your normal big hits that fall within the rules.

He hit him helmet to helmet with enough ferocity to knock a chunk of his ear off. I wonder what he would consider dirty if that wasn't it.

Good suspension, well deserved. Everyone moves on
