Quick question about Joe Johnson, I've heard some comparisons to Magic Johnson, does that mean he could be a starting PG in the NBA? ------------------ Say what you must, Do all you can, Break all the f***ing rules and go to Hell with Superman, And die like a champion, Yahey!
BGM-Everything I've heard, is that he's got handles for a guy his size in the range of Penny/Odom. Basically, he's projected as a SF, but can start the ball on the break, and play PG role if we want to use Steve as an offguard occassionally. Most comparisons I see are Penny with a couple of inches, minus injuries (the Phoenix SG version). ------------------ "I think alot of people find Cato's game to be very offensive." -aelliott, comparing the offensive skills of Kelvin Cato and Michael Olowokandi
Ark. big guard good ballhandler, can stroke the 3, can slide over and play some point and SF if needed- TODD DAY sorry can't get T.Day out of my head when I hear about moving up for JJ I would take him with 13, but not any higher ------------------
sorry can't get T.Day out of my head when I hear about moving up for JJ You have got to forget about the past. Just because a player with a similar background did something doesn't mean everyone will. The whole BBS consistently tries to point to someone in the past as a means to drag down someone this year, and we shouldn't be afraid of people for that reason. You have to move on. JJ could be like Todd Day, because the backgrounds are similar. But a ton of other lottery picks have similar backgrounds to some players in the past who I don't think you'd want either... Eddie Griffin-- Derrick Coleman Eddy Curry-- Stanley Roberts Shane Battier-- Danny Ferry Pau Gasol-- Mircad Turkcan Vladimir Radmanovic-- Mircad Turkcan Brendan Haywood-- Michael Olowokandi Sagana Diop-- Yinka Dare These are just a few I could think of off the top of my head... do you suggest we avoid all of them as well? Just because players have similar backgrounds and profiles doesn't mean they will all follow in the same footsteps... ------------------ "Basketball players win basketball games. Cat- wasn't trying to compare them as players. Because I've never seen JJ play I end up thinking of T. Day when he comes up. I've heard nothing but good about J Johnson, hope he falls to 13. I wouldn't move up for him, I would just as soon have R. Jefferson as JJ T. Day was a better player than most the guys you listed. ------------------
LOL! You forgot about RJ's windmill dunk! Take Joe Johnson, take Radman, take anybody. Leave Jefferson to losers who need a single highlight clip to show their fan. ------------------ [This message has been edited by enbehay (edited June 23, 2001).]
http://www.nba.com/draft2001/index.html?nav=ArticleList Here's a nice little clip showing Johnson in action. The clip is on the right hand side, a little more than half way down the page. As you can see from the clip, JJ is a very smooth player to say the least. Shows off nice ballhandling abilities and a good feel for the game. A solid, yet unspectacular athlete. Kind of plays like Reggie Freeman with a tad bit more athleticism and size, and minus the ugly looking release. [This message has been edited by Da Man (edited June 23, 2001).]
Who is/was Reggie Freeman? ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. Because someday you will have been all of these."
I said this somewhere else, but, again, anyone else see Todd Day when they look at J.J.? ------------------
Reggie Freeman was a 2nd team All-American in 1997. He was projected by many to go in the first round in the 1997 draft. But like Scotty Thurman before him, he went undrafted after staying a year longer when most projected him to be a first round draft pick in 1996. He was a 6'7" guard with tremendous ball handling skills and played for the University of Texas. One of the elite scorers in college basketball with great range on his shot. He was born and raised in New York city and he showcased that playground, Rucker style of basketball. He wasn't the greatest athlete, but he had very deceptive quickness for his size. He got picked up by the Bucks as a Rookie free agent. I think he's bouncing around as a professional in some league right now. On a personal note, I remember playing some pick up basketball 2 years ago on the UT campus. I was guarding Wayne McGarrity who now plays wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. And I was playing on a team with some tall guy, who was sticking J's all over the court. And he kept talking trash to Gabe Muoneke. And I was like who the hell is this guy? They all kept calling him Reggie. I remember beating Wayne down court for an easy layup and Reggie found me for the assist. And I finally found out it was Reggie Freeman. It all started making sense for me. If you ever stop in New York during the summer time, you'll spot Reggie Freeman leading some team in the Rucker basketball league. Joe Johnson's game reminds me a lot of Reggie Freeman. Very slick ball handler for his size. Not the greatest athlete, but has a tremendous feel for the game. But he's got a little more bulk than Reggie, and he's a more pure jump shooter which will greatly benefit him on the next level. ------------------
