This is hilarious because of Gerald Wallace. Nets can't keep Wallace, Johnson, Williams, and Howard. And if they let go of Wallace, that means that they traded the #6 pick for six weeks of Gerald Wallace, which I think would make it the worst trade ever.

Sports. Hawks guard Joe Johnson has four years and nearly $90 million left on his contract. The Nets' plan would be to pair Johnson and point guard Deron Williams to create an All-Star backcourt. No deal is close, and the Hawks and Nets were both discussing deals on several fronts, sources said. Hawks officials have told teams they have multiple trade possibilities. Multiple league sources believe the Nets are losing hope they can pry Howard out of Orlando, and are working diligently to construct a roster to keep Williams that doesn't necessarily give them the financial flexibility to absorb Howard when he can become a free agent next year. If the Magic do eventually make a deal for Howard – something that they haven't shown an inclination yet to do under new general manager Rob Hennigan – the Nets would be stocked with the kind of expensive veteran contracts that wouldn't appeal to Orlando's blueprint for rebuilding. Williams has hoped to play with Howard in Brooklyn, but Orlando has shown no immediate intent to move its All-Star center, who has one year left on his contract, sources said. Forget Wallace, they can't keep Williams and Johnson while adding Howard. First, they don't have enough to trade for Howard in the upcoming season. Second in the 2013-14 season, Howard can become a FA and theoretically can sign with the Nets. However, in 2013/14, Johnson and Williams alone make a combined $39.97 million. Even if the rest of the roster is filled only with rookie FAs or rookie 2nd round picks (not even 2nd year FAs, we talking ROOKIE FAs), their total salary will be about $44.9 million million. Dwight Howard is eligible for a $19.95 million starting salary. So, this means that the salary cap in 2013 has to go up to $64.82 million from the current $58.04 million (the # for last season, also projected for this season). It is highly improbable that the cap will make such a jump (11.7%). And this is leaving alone the fact that (a) Dwight Howard will have to choose the Nets and (b) they will have to have nothing but rookie minimum guys populating the roster.
The Nets might possibly have the most shortsided thinking gm in the league. He is awful. With proper financial maneuvering he could have landed the best center in the league. That 6th pick for Wallace really screwed them. No way they get Howard.

I think they want Scola, but the last thing they want to do is help the Rockets get Howard and Williams. meh, unless they find a way to keep Lopez then they might be interesting. I'm just glad Morey isn't desperate enough to trade for Joe Johnson.
