I'm a senior at UT-Austin majoring in broadcast journalism and have received dean's list honors every year I've been in school, this being my 3rd year. I will finish at UT in may, but will take my last 3 hours of government credit by correspondence in Katy, where I'm from.

I currently have an internship starting tommorrow with KEYE, the CBS affiliate in Austin. However, I'm almost positive I won't pursue that sector of journalism when I graduate. I will instead pursue a career in newspaper or magazine sports writing, or as a fallback option, sports talk radio.

My plans are to try and get on the Katy Times as a writer in the fall once I'm back in Katy, and to string or intern for the Chronicle at the same time, in order to build up my credentials and get published clips.

One thing I will say is I will not settle for any job in journalism. It's sports journalism or work at a temp job until I get a job that fits my career track for me, and I will not fail. I have no doubt about it. Part of being a journalist is having supreme confidence in one's ability, and I have that, besides the god given gift of being a great writer. Plus, I will not be out worked.

Yes, I am concerned about the salaries and job market for my future profession, but I don't want to be a sports journalist for the money. To me a job is about happiness and I won't be happy until I become a sports writer for a semi decent paper someday. I know relatives who had similar aspirations in different fields and abandoned them during college. But that's not how I work. I am determined to see it through, or at the very least if it won't work out, I'll go back to school and get the necessary education requirements so I could coach sports, or go to Law School to become a sports agent.

I will work in sports though, no doubt about it, and I'm confident in my ability and chances to be successful. UT's excellent journalism department has prepared me well.

Finally, I wish everyone luck in their respective job searches.

I have excellent writing skills, five years of customer service experience, four years of handling large sums of money ($100,000 +).

    I can do anything. :D

Ironically, Wal-Mart is one of the companies I stand the best chance of getting a job at right now. (in software development)

This kind of attitude is pretty grim. I haven't given up hope by any stretch just yet, though. I imagine since the fall of Austin and Compaq, Texas is one of the worst places to head right now. I actually have several leads in Maryland, where my wife is from, so I may end up getting a job out there. I can be happy with that. I was hoping with all the "projected" market recovery predictions for 2004 that things might be improving again in Texas. Maybe it was all just wishful thinking...

Baqui, is your company looking for CS majors? Also, does your company come to the Career fair at Texas State? I'm looking for an internship right now.

Unfortunately, we're looking at EEs and MEs right now. The recruiting tour rolls through the following schools: UT, A&M, Ga. Tech, Michigan, and Purdue as far as I know.

i had the same problem as you when i was graduating with my degree in chemical engineering. i had a high gpa (not a 4.0 though ), but no work experience. and when i would sign up for interviews, i noticed people with much, much lower gpas getting picked over me. those people had some co-op or internship experience, and it seemed like that was all that really mattered.

some advice for you (you probably already know this)-- make sure you get a job with an operating company. dont get stuck in a engineering and construction company like fluor or bechtel or halliburton. operating companies pay better and give you better hands on experience. later, you can always switch to an E&C company after working in an operating company. but you cant make the switch to an operating company if you start out in a E&C

Yes, we'll be at the Expo on Feb. 6th. I've been through the intern program at Dell, and they really expect alot out of you. You need to be able to deal well with ambiguity and drive for results. Also, your communication skills are really important. I've see plenty of smart ones passed over because they couldn't communicate ideas effectively.

Ideally, you need a good background in analog and digital design. Much of the information from EE338 is very useful, as is EE316. As an intern, you might be given a project to write test software for a development group, or something similar, so programming skills are a big plus. LabView skills are also helpful.

Just a followup on this to give the other CS guys some hope. I just got a job with Synmantec! (they're the company that owns the Norton Anti-Virus Suite, among other things) I'll be staying here in Utah for a while most likely, but I'm not going to argue with them.

    :)

Things are looking up in the market. Literally about 20 minutes after I got done talking to the people at Symantec and accepting the job, another company called me up and wanted to do an interview. I had to tell them no thanks!

Obviously I'm really excited for myself, but I thought I'd share because a lot of people are really worried about finding work, and I think this is a good sign that it's out there.

    congrats, horsey. :)

most likely the bigger company, but you were certain that symantec was a better opportunity before turning down the other interview i'm sure.

Way to go DH. BTW, on patent law, that, too is starting to be outsourced according to one of the threads on outsourcing on D&D. Grunt technical work is the main thing being outsourced so that lawyerly lawyer types in the states can do the legal work.

    Where in the country?

Have you tried the federal government jobs database?

Doesn't your school still provide placement services?

I got some pointers on resume writing, which I think probably helped get me an interview. At that point, of course, you're on you're own.

I guess the short version of good resume 101 is this:
    1. Don't bother putting an objective. Several people told me it's BS and companies know it, so it's just wasting space.
    2. Don't just list a bunch of languages/platforms/etc that you know. Instead, offer context for where you have used them, and if at all possible, show what kind of results you got. (if you got top marks in the class, go ahead and tell them that... aparently they like that sort of thing)
    3. Try to tailor your resume as much as possible toward the company you're applying for. It's easier to just send everyone the same resume, but it's more effective if you don't. Obviously put any related work experience in as much as possible. I have none, but I have been a TA for two classes at BYU, and that was enough work experience for them.
    4. If your GPA isn't great, don't bother putting it, but if you do decide to put it on, put a range. (i.e. - 3.5 out of 4.0) My GPA was unspectacular, so I left it off. They never even asked me about it.
    5. Don't bother putting a hobbies/other activities kind of section unless you really have something pertinent to include. "Member of the chess club" probably isn't worth much to an employer.

I don't know if any of these help. Maybe they're all common sense. And there are a lot more.

Some extracurricular activities that show some sort of leadership/organizational/teamwork stuff might be good in the context of why you would be a good employee.
