    At the end of the interview he took off his shades and spoke with Letterman up close. He may have been trying to let him know whats up.

    Looks to be an act.

    I highly doubt that Letterman sees his guests for the first time that day as the taping progresses.

    all true, but it doesnt take a great actor to pull that off. keanu reeves could have acted the same way and the natural assumption would be that it's real, since it isnt exactly normal to waste your letterman interview doing that.

    I do think it was probably a joke, but Joaquin has already been in rehab, so it isn't unrealistic to think that just because his brother died, he wouldn't do drugs.
