Reminds me of last year when Watt sacked Orlovsky at waist level, but the refs called a personal foul because Orlovsky's head jerked down and hit Watt's helmet. Stuff like that is terrible, especially when guys lose money over it.

Put your face into a guy's numbers is pretty much the definition of form tackling. Apparently in the NFL, they want you to give the QB a hummer.

    Whatever happened to incidental contact?

It no longer exists. If you touch a QB's head expect a flag and maybe a fine.

What are you guys talking about? lol...that is fine worthy.

Im totally happy about it though, I like the opposing QBs getting beat up.

If Suh did that to Schaub, I'd be calling for a massive fine.

You cant touch the QBs head, even if the hit begins at chest level. Watt's hit was illegal and we are lucky we didnt get flagged for it, otherwise, the Lions probably would have won that game.

Yeah I don't really have a problem with them fining JJ if it happens. It would be pretty consistent with other fines this year. It sucks that if a player's initial hit is NOT the head that they are held responsible for hitting the head on a reaction to that hit, but if JJ had gone slightly lower he would have not snapped up and hit Stafford's helmet at all. I know I don't have to pay the fine but it doesn't bother me since it is obvious there was no malicious intent, which is what can get players into hot water over time. I don't think this would get JJ a reputation or anything. If anything, I have been very impressed with him so far in his career with how well he has followed the new rules despite the shear number of hits he puts on QBs (like over 30 now for the season, I believe).

The NFL needs to understand the concept of incidental contact.

As I was watching the game with my father-in-law, he said, "Oh, that could be a fine!"

I looked at him and said, "That was a textbook tackle. I think people have forgotten what that looks like."

If Watt is fined, it's proof that the art of tackling has gone out the window.

Problem is that they are fining those situations, to lower the cases of incidental contact. Had Watt hit him lower, that incidental contact wouldnt have been made.

It sucks, and there is such a push to protect QBs, it's wussifying the game.

Im just glad the refs werent flag happy on that play. I'd gladly just pay the fine in place of having a penalty called. Earl Thomas got a crappy penalty against Tannehill yesterday which not only reversed an INT by the Seahawks, but also led to a TD by the Dolphins.

It is pretty sad when a textbook tackle is fine worthy.

I won't be surprised to see a fine though, which sucks. I do have a gut feeling that it won't happen though. We'll see.

I have a gut feeling it won't happen, either.

That is about as textbook of a tackle on a sack as I've ever seen. Dead serious.

I'm not one to advocate for legislating intent, but it's pretty clear that the NFL is in the business of doing that on multiple occassions. If you see a guy going for the head, fine him. If he makes a legit play and circumstances beyond his control end up creating a helmet to helmet collision, then let it go.

Example of purposeful hit to the head:

I also think that hits to the facemask/under the chin need to be let go. I don't think they're nearly as dangerous, and 9 times out of 10, a form tackle to someone's chest will result in the facemask taking some of the blow. What usually ends up causing the damage in that situation is someone's head hitting the ground, and not the actual tackle itself.

    I agree Donny.

In this case, I just think the NFL has to stay consistent with the punishments they've been dishing out in the past.

I think Watt will be fined, probably the smallest amount possible.

I think Suh will be fined 50k.

not gonna lie, that was a vicious hit by watt.. no intent to be dirty behind the hit so I would agree with the fine.. suh on the other hand has a bad rep as being a dirty player and I hope he gets fined for kicking schaub in the beaner and the horse collar take-down

By this logic, QBs should duck into contact any time they see a defender move toward them and draw an automatic 15-yard penalty and first down. 4th and 35? Just don't pick up the blitz and let your QB drop into them at helmet level. First down!

If Schaub wants to take on those hits, count me in. May as well throw TJ Yates back there though.

15K fine just announced. In other words, Watt delivering a perfectly-placed hit to Stafford's chest is a worse offense than an offensive lineman ending Brian Cushing's season with an unnecessary and blindsided blow to his lower body.

This is Roger Goodell's NFL in a nutshell. **** you, Roger.

i'm still not blaming roger, as bs as the fine is.
Players have to come together at the table and agree with pen and paper, that in the future, even if they start seeing three headed demons after them, they will not file lawsuits against the league.
The NFLPA should ask the old players, all 2,000 of them to get rid of their lawsuits and to stop complaining!

If not, we might be seeing flags on them or something like this:
    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Pn_EiAzW2uQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

it already seems like that with the tecmo bowl offenses.

sucks for watt though. That's how a tackle should be delivered, proper technique no criminal intent.

Problem I have is that it is clear that Stafford's head jolts into the Watt's helmet, so we are fining players because Stafford lowered his helmet to create contact or the laws of physics caused the contact?

Also the fact that Watt's fine is still higher then the Jets Guard Slauson with his cheap shot that took out Brian Cushing for the season.

The NFL needs to go back to the drawing board on who chooses or determines fines because the people they have no are crap and need to be let go.
