Ooooooh.. JJ may finally make it off the bench!! http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/basketball/magic/orl-magic2308oct23,0,5826095.story
Full article: ------------------------------------ The local chapter of the J.J. Redick Fan Club is either about to celebrate or perhaps storm Stan Van Gundy's office. Hold the protest marches. It appears that Redick finally has extracted himself from the bench after two frustrating seasons with the Orlando Magic. Van Gundy didn't officially announce it -- "no need to make a big public thing of it" -- but if his analysis of Redick's play is any indication, J.J. will be in the rotation come the Magic's regular-season opener Wednesday. "I don't think there's any doubt that of the two-guards -- of all our guards -- he played the best," Van Gundy said after the Magic (6-1) finished their exhibition season Wednesday night with a 101-90 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. "I'd be lying saying anything else." Check out our Sports Pictures of the Day photo gallery Photos It's just that Van Gundy was in no mood to throw bouquets toward any of his players after what he called an "embarrassing display" and a "dumb approach" against the Griz. He had lauded his club for returning with focus after its stellar 2007-08 run. But he said the game showed "a real sign of immaturity," ripping their defensive intensity in the second half as they let off the gas. Well, Van Grumbly is in midseason form. Hedo Turkoglu returned after sitting out two games with a groin strain to score 22. Rashard Lewis also had 22 and Dwight Howard 11 points and eight rebounds. Van Gundy did say of Redick's 15-point (7-of-12 shooting) effort in the game, "He was a culprit. One of the lesser culprits." Redick, who has been competing against Keith Bogans to become the first shooting guard behind starter Mickael Pietrus, averaged 10.5 points and shot 51.1 percent in six games. He hit 10 3-pointers, finishing behind Lewis' 15. "Personally, I feel like I've gotten a lot better and I've shown that," Redick said. "But there's another week of practice to go, so we'll see. "I've done everything I can to earn minutes. But as someone once told me, you're only as good as your last game, your last practice. So I've got to build off what I've done so far." The club's 2006 first-round pick out of Duke has sat and mostly watched, rather impatiently last season, when his camp finally requested a trade. The outlook didn't appear to be much brighter for Redick this offseason. The Magic added two more shooting guards, signing Pietrus and drafting Courtney Lee. Redick vowed after the furor of his trade request leaked to not just make the best of it, but to work overtime on his deficiencies, most notably defense. He built up his body and improved his footwork. Van Gundy was impressed at the strides J.J. had made, saying that Redick executed defensive principles better than Bogans, even if Bogans was better man-to-man. Asked if he felt comfortable matching Redick against the best shooting guards in the league, (i.e. Joe Johnson, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James) Van Gundy said that he had no reservations. "Very rarely there is a night at that position when you're not facing an outstanding offensive player," Van Gundy said. "You have to [defend them] if you're going to play." ---------------------------------------------------------- DD
