please explain to me what's unfair about it. being traded is part of the business...and these guys are paid handsomely for it.
Wow I agree with TJ too? The end of the world must be close. I'm not to excited either way about JJ/Wesley. Thats just churning marginal players in hopes of getting a little change in tempo, the effect will not be too significant either way. The two boneheaed bad management moves as I see it are: 1. Wasting the value Boki had as the 'throw-in' in a really significant trade. A lot of times the perception of future returns is skewed out of preportion to tangible returns (hence the dotcom explsion of the late 90's) Teams might have more willing to make a trade of equal or lessor value for our PF's if they thought they might be stealing a future star with Boki added to the deal. Instead we gave away our mystery prize in an even up exchange. Now we have nothing left for sweetener to make the trade we really need to make (with the possible excetion of the TE to take another PF contract off a non-contender's hands..and look real dumb paying $25 million just for the PF position) 2. You have to have talked to JJ about this trade before you make it. The man has been traded 5 times and now you want him to go quietly to the Siberian gulag of basketball. Retirement is a real possibility and if he does...well we just look totally incompetent.
Exactly. Nothing unfair about JJ being traded, just like there was nothing unfair about Steve being traded. It happens.
I don't understand this move at all...we now have another guard who isn't really a point guard...and is no better at shooting than JJ...what am I missing? Does CD watch the games?
He ought to know since he's the prime reason that there's so much "quality" on the Rockets' roster...
Cuban also benefits from the luxury of having a GM who can actually DRAFT players as well as find NBA talent. It makes a big difference...
Dang Hillboy 4 posting in a row taking hits at CD! Easyy there... But your right after this trade i dont know wat the hell CD is thinking...
i'm confused, hillboy. how do you feel about CD. just be straight-forward about it...don't hide your emotions. if you could sum it up in about 6 different posts, that would be great too. thanks in advance!
Umm, I may have sugar coated my posts a bit too much. I'm trying to be a kinder gentler HillBoy. Actually upon further review, this trade does make sense. Before, everyone was upset about the problems at the PF position. Now, in a master stroke, CD has created another gaping hole at the SF position to divert everyone's attention from that other gaping hole at the 4. His strategy has proven to be enormously successful because ever since this trade went down, no one has complained about the problems at the PF spot. As the Guiness Stout guys would say: "Brilliant!".
I was wondering the same thing. Also, what's the deal with Jay Williams - last I heard he was tring to come back from his injury. Is he still property of the Bulls, FA?
Codell and MadMax, I am with you on the NBA is a business issue. JJ's been in the league long enough to know that. It's pretty sad that he gets traded to the worst team in the league...but, business is business in today's NBA. Unless of course the rockets verbally promised not to trade JJ in exchange for a smaller contract...that would be different. I don't see that though.
jimeny christmas..this guy gets traded all the freaking time. he's been with, what?? 10 teams in 11 years?? something like that. he's no stranger to being traded. and he's made an ass-load playing in this league. i feel sorry for the people in asia..i feel sorry for those who are displaced by war...i feel sorry for those who lost loved ones...i have a hard time feeliing sorry for Jim Jackson.
Under the table deals like that are illegal. No offense to JJ, but I have doubts whether the Rockets would risk such a thing for a player of his caliber. And I doubt a team, the Rockets or anyone, are stupid enough to promise a player that they will never be traded. And players aren't stupid enough to believe them if they did say that.
Good trade IMO for these reasons: Assuming our starting lineup is: Sura, Wesley, Tmac, JH, and Yao like CD alluded to on 610. 1. Defense improves-- Our starting defense should be better with this lineup. Sura will likely guard the opposing SG and will to a better job at it than JJ did (he's a better defender/quicker than JJ was). Wesley will guard opposing PG and will do a better job at it than Sura did (he's much quicker than Sura). Tmac is adept to covering SF both athletic ones (Lebron, Posey) and stronger ones (plus he and JJ have been switching off to defend the better player at SF/SG). Although we lost 4 inches, overall we should be a quicker defensive team. 2. Offensive-- Our starting offense will likely be pretty much the same. Wesley is a pure shooter. I don't think he is much of a creator, but he can definately put the ball in the basket (esp. when he is left open). I do think overall that we are more athletic of an offensive team which may lead to more fast break opportunites. I think this move definately did not hurt the team offensively and has more opportunity to help (we will see in the future). In addition, I doubt JVG will have Wesley as the exclusive ball handler. I think he will keep Sura as the primary ballhandler with Wesley and Tmac occasionaly setting the plays up depeding on match ups. 3. Roster-- This trade freed up a spot on the roster which seems to be coveted, esp. if all of our PG's are injured. We will now be able to sign 10 day contracts to band aid our injuries. Overall, I like the trade. I thought JJ was an outstanding player for us and I hate to lose him, but we had to give up something to get something. As for Boki, I know alot of people thought he could be great, but fact of the matter is that Boki was a bust. He is not an NBA quality player. I doubt he gets any minutes with the Hornets even though they are terrible. Boki can't defend, fouls too much (1.9 fouls per 12 min. this year), he can't shoot the 2pt's (.354 fg%), and can't shoot freethrows (68%). He makes the team worse when he is on the court. Do you honestly think that this SF starved team would not play him if he was worth anything at all? Don't tell me he didn't have a chance. He had 3 years of Rockets practice time to prove he could play in this league, and he failed terribly. I wonder why people aren't infatuated with Reece Gaines? He was drafted at 15 like Boki and he had a good college career. He probably has just as much touted "potential" as Boki does. Maybe there is some kind of unseen favoritism toward Boki on this bbs.
