I don't understand this deal what so ever. JJ was a good role-player and was arguably our best (playing) 3pt shooter. I looked around the league last night and realized that there aren't any PGs that are available to be acquired and actually thought about Wesley, but certainly for JJ AND Boki. There has to be something else going on cause, if we are moving TMac to the three, I don't see how our backcourt improved at all. Before: Sura/Lue/Ward(Barret) TMac/Bowen/JJ Now: Sura/Wesley/Barret Wesley/Barry
The only thing that can salvage this trade is if we package Wesley and Mo, and send them off to the Nugs for White and Nene. White would make up for Boki pretty easily. He's a great shooter from all areas of the floor, not just the 3point line. Nene would give us a legit PF who can rebound and defend... But I really doubt anything is going to happen. The Rockets are already commenting on the trade, talking about how Wesley will help. This is a sad day in Rocket's history.
Not that the trade is all that, but Jackson wasn't doing anything really this year. Defensively he worked hard but was too slow to guard other 2's and was decent but overmatched against taller SF's, offensively if his shot wasn't falling, which it wasn't a lot, or so it seemed on a lot of nights, he was worthless. As for rebounding, he did a good job for a guy 6-4 but was outmatched last year by taller 3's. That said he was a pro's pro and will be missed. More telling than the fact that we traded our "THIRD BEST PLAYER" is the fact that he was playing 40 plus minutes a game and was our third best player at this stage in his career.
JJ's play this season hasn't been very good. But I couldn't believe we got rid of Boki. Rockets are getting older and older. And our only young talent AB is on the IL. When Yao is locked into max after next season, Rockets cap situation will be hopeless.
I am thinking its gonna be comical to see Wesley guard Kobe or Ray Allen we will be lucky if they don't light us up for 75.
I don't know whether I like this trade or not, but it isn't bad, and it makes sense. First off, moving TMac to the 3 isn't an issue, it isn't getting smaller. He's 6'8"—2 inches taller than JJ—with very long arms; he's longer than most 3s in the league and as/more athletic than any of them; he'll have a quickness advantage over most 3s inthe league too. As for Wesley, they'll start Sura at point and Wesley at SG, but they'll have them guarding the opposite positions on D. Wesley is supposedly a very tough defender, though I haven't seen enough of him to offer an opinion. One of the big complaints from JVG and scouts this year was the Rocket's inability to stop the opposing PG right? So they bring in Wesley to lock down opposing PGs and Sura, a good defender but not quick enough to handle PGs, guards SGs. I'm not a huge Wesley fan, but this deal does make sense if he can still guard PGs.
i bet james posey would fit right in with us right about now.. steals and spot up shooter, and if not he would run the fast break with t-mac to bad we couldn't get him back. last night during a fast break... sura was the only person running down the court.. and the rest were clippers.. what frustrates me is we need to get players who can run down the court and set up fast break points instead of players who can only stay around half court all the time.. CD needs to get players who can run the floor, young and energetic to hang with yao and t-mac.. instead of trading old for old. damn.
But it should would make for a fun phone call! Most everyone thought the product sucked 2 games ago and were just about out of playoff contention. I really don't think we are done yet. I expect another move.
I don't know if you saw Jackson try to guard Kobe in the playoffs last year a few times when Cat was out. "Comical" is one word that comes to mind..... "pwned" is another....
Well 790 just had a short clip from the press conf where JVG says... this shows how the mgmt. is upset about the team and concerened about the health of our backcourt
JVG should pay attention to not noting he did acquired charlie ward... with brittle legs... and where is he now..
JJ was never a "3", he's always been a SG playing out of position. I'm not bummed to lose him, per se, but I don't know what Wesley brings to the table. We've acquired 2 SGs in the past couple days, a position that our best player already occupies. I don't think they'll move TMac to the 3, it seems more likely that Wesley will be played out of position at the PG spot. But if Sura's joining Ward on the IL, Van Gundy's hand might have been forced. Wesley isn't a prototypical 1 but I think he'll be at least as serviceable there as Sura was (another combo guard). Wesley-TMac-Bowen-Howard-Yao is my guess on a starting lineup, with the team going with 3 guards alot depending on matchups.
Let's have a little perspective here. It's not like they've torn apart a championship team. I'm willing to give this trade a chance before I rip it. To me we got a player of similar ability but that has a better skill set for our team. All of JJ's main skills we already have in TMac, so why not mix it up a little. I do agree that we should still make another trade.
