Wait what? This makes no sense the mask made over 350 million and is a 25 year old movie how the hell are you trying to say people did not like it that much. The Mask was the launching point of Carrey and Diaz it was very much the 8th highest grossing movie in 1994 and there were some great movies. Carrey had 3 of the highest grossing movies in 94. I was alive in 94 and the Mask was a huge thing. No those other movies were not better received both had middling reviews.
The movie I was thinking about was Dumb and Dumber. I didn't think of the Truman show because I consider that more of a drama, but it's actually an excellent movie. I would consider it the best he's been in. But, the mask/ace ventura/etc was just not funny to me or anyone I grew up with. I was way more into Martin or fresh prince or even the jamie foxx show.
Sales are not reception. It may have been a launching point for Carrey but many people did not think it was this all-time great movie.
I said Iverson and Durant because both are clearly great actors. And who is Iverson and George in this scenario?
And that's why those movies have more cult like following, it's not to denigrate on them though. The issue with comedies is that they are SUPER subjective. If it's not funny, the movie fails to connect with that person and all the jokes seem corny to them and it feels like a waste of time. So they are usually a hit or miss. But a movie like say Parasite, which certainly has some comedy in it, even if you laugh at nothing in that movie you can appreciate the storytelling through out and everything else. Like my Borat example, there really is no story to that movie, not really...so if someone doesn't laugh instead of the movie being a 9 to them it's like a 2. Because yeah, I didn't find The Mask and Ace Ventura all that funny, a few laughs here and there for sure, but it just didn't have me going like that but I can understand why people enjoy those movies.
I guess i do gave to give Foxx more credit on range. Obviously Ray is great because of him and it truly is a great movie. For someone who remembers Ray Charle's later years, Foxx nailed him Im so glad his biography was made because i didnt know his life story. Secondly i say Foxx nailed it because not knowing much about Charles when he was alive, i knew he had a commanding presence as a person that other celebrities had tremendous respect for
