i think that's a fair point. it's a semantics issue, i guess. i haven't read through all this thread, but this post makes sense to me. it's like having a war on poverty, for example. poverty will always be with us. or a war on crime. crime will always be with us. that doesn't mean you don't work to solve those issues/problems. but labelling it a war assumes a beginning and an end in people's minds, i think.

my hope is that islamic terrorism goes the way of the Klan and the mafia. i realize it will take a ton of different factors to make that reality.

OK, I must have missed the part of the article where anyone declared the "war on terror" (or whatever you prefer to call it) was over because of these arrests.

I don't know, I thought this was pretty good news when I first read it, what with hundreds of lives possibly being saved by this plot not coming to fruition. But I guess I was wrong. After all, it's just people doing their jobs. What's the big deal? Hell, the whole story was probably planted so that the government could have another excuse to listen to my boring phone conversations.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go _______ with my huge ______.

    Two great replies.

Glad my office wasnt flooded by a mad bomber....but I'm still not scared to live here in NYC. Being scared means the lunatics win.

Excellent post, Max. I would like to see less rhetoric from the Administration about this "war," and more action from military Special Forces and law enforcement. Full funding for the 9/11 Commission's recommendations, not cuts, or simply ignoring them. And it would be wonderful if we didn't have to be barraged with ads and sound-bites from the Administration and the GOP every election cycle about this "war," with the inevitable responses from the DNC and Democrats, from now until Hell freezes over.

It would be great if this political football were deflated.

I doubt the GOP has a monopoly on silly slogans, both parties seem to be pretty good at it. However it gets spun, we are in a long term fight to maintain the security of our nation. It is good to see the forces in charge of this score on for the good guys. IMHO, New York and D.C. are prime targets and them losing funding to say, Orlando or Vegas is idiotic. People should never cheer American failure for the sake of political gain, whether one hails to be Republican or Democrat. On the other hand, people shouldn't have to thin a skin not to be able take criticism if they aren't doing a good job.

The war on terroism is not a war on islamic terrorism.

"This is not simply a fight against terror - terror is a tactic. This is not simply a fight against Al Qaeda, its affiliates and adherents - they are foot soldiers. This is not simply a fight to bring democracy to the Middle East - that is a strategic objective. This is a fight for the very ideas at the foundation of our society, the way of life those ideas enable, and the freedoms we enjoy."

-R.L. Brownlee, Acting Secretary of the Army
-General Peter J. Schoomaker, Chief of Staff, United States Army

This is a war intentionally designed without end.

The problem is I think this is more than just rhetoric. As I see it they are trying to intentionally confuse this metaphorical war with a traditional war. Once this occurs they can claim the right to use all sorts of special, extraordinary wartime powers that are allowed as temporary measures for a real war. These powers are intended to be temporary for a specific period of military conflict, but the war on terror as they have defined it is essentially eternal.

They therefore have created a way to allow extraordinary, temporary powers on an unlimited, eternal basis.

    Bush Administraton - 1
    Constitution - 0

The constitution of the Soviet Union had all sorts of rights and powers that rivled those of the United States granted to its citizens. The loophole that was they were all suspended when the government declared a state of emergency. The Soviet Union was in a declared state of emergency from it's inception until it disintegrated.

Not really. I'm not saying it's what I believe. I'm taking what a lot of people are saying now and relating it to a historical event.

Much of what happened in WWII would be seen as maneuvering by Bush/Rove by a lot of people on this board and wouldn't be believed. There are already conspiracy theorists who believe FDR allowed/made Pearl Harbor occur. We're seeing a little of that with 9/11 and that idiotic slideshow that was posted here a while back.

I'm just saying that a lot of people here wouldn't have supported some of these wars in the past and/or would have called them 'un-winnable' much like some are doing today.

Does this mean they're wrong about the WOT? No.

It's just I've always wondered how some of the more radical posters on the board would have viewed/posted about past conflicts without the benefit of hindsight.

Is anyone else bothered that this information was released? Is it one of those things that had to be leaked for support? I'm glad we got em, but like the bank snooping thing, I figure some things should be kept out of the public's eye. looks like we're already catching some flack for this getting leaked..

i learn all kinds of cool stuff on this board. a lot from you, otto.

oceania is at war with eurasia. oceania has always been at war with eurasia.

and this gives me reason to post my other favorite orwell quote:

“During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”

I felt the same way until I saw this very, very convincing "experiment" by our sane friends at Democratic Underground. It proves, conclusively in my mind, that the towers could not have been brought down by jetfuel fire alone.

We're through the looking glass now, people.
