Nothing. No internet, and we'd be in uniform.

That we had identifiable opponents in all of those wars.

So your real problem is with the slogan. Fine - call it national defense. We scored a victory in national defense with the stopping of this terror plot.

You liberals crack me up - getting your panties in a wad over wording. Pathetic. All of you need to figure out something called perspective.

EXACTLY. This is an example of a law enforcement success and while the fact that they caught these guys at the plotting stage is obviously admirable and something that is to be commended, it is not a "victory" in some ethereal "battle" against well, an adjective.

The war on terror is a puffed-up mischaracterization by a bunch of reactionary right wing chicken hawks. It is an issue of preventing crime, period. Just like the "war" on drugs, "war" on child p*rn, "war" on organized crime. BLAH BLAH BLAH.

    Rhetoric for the sheeple.

    That is all.

You know what? I have a hard time believing any of this stuff. It's great if it's true. This sort of thing happened all the time during the McCarthy era - plots were always being 'foiled'. All the time. Were there really plots? It's hard to tell because so many politicians (and their parties) had such great stakes in the matter.

I wish the Jihadists would stop being complete idiots and realize that the source of the problems is not the average commuter, but the high-level politicians and business maggots. If these p*****s had any sack at all, they'd go after the real targets instead of innocent average people.

It's a big deal because it likely saved many lives. All you liberals are just pissed because you think that with every terror plot we bust up, the Republicans rise in the polls. So transparent. So sad.

My "panties" aren't in a wad over wording -- they're in a wad over sloganeering and political gamesmanship taking the place of making a serious effort to defend this nation. But since you would undoubtedly disagree with that assessment, please answer the following questions. Thanks in advance.

    1. How does it serve our national defense to cut the homeland security budget in the city that is the biggest target for terrorists in this country by 40%

    2. Which recommendations of the 9/11 commission do you think we should not enact and why?

And guess what: we didn't even need a B-2 bomber and 100 US servicemen to be killed to stop a plot.

It's not the slogan, it's the reasoning behind it. As long as there is a unending war to fight there is good reason to expand executive emergency powers enormously etc. So this war is never ending, mobilization will be never ending, and expansion of power will be unending. And of course people profit from power.

    True to a certain extent.

However, for example, during WWII I can imagine the protests:

"Why are we attacking in Europe when we were bombed by Japan? Someone should get FDR a map."

You've completely lost any kind of perspective. We have to defend our country. Your silly doomsday scenario is worthy of a Jump to Conclusions Mat.

As a matter of fact, if Hitler hadn't insanely declared war on us first, FDR would have had a difficult time getting Congress and the American people to enter the European war. The majority of Americans wanted no part of it, and neither did the majority in Congress. FDR was fighting an uphill battle getting aid to Britain, until Pearl Harbor, and Hitler's mad act.

You don't care about defending the country or about having a serious discussion. If you cared about either of those things, you'd answer my questions above.

    This just in.
My 5 year old niece washed the mud off her new shoes.
She then declared a war on yucky.

Since you clearly have a bone to pick here, why don't you enlighten the rest of the board with your opinions on the two questions you posed. I'm about to go to the driving range to hit some balls. I don't have time to address your questions. I'm deeply sorry.
