Was just watching the sports section of ABC news on tv...kinda weird clips they showed of Faneca...one weak block where he fell to the ground and another one where he missed the block. Even though he might not be ideal for the ZBS, I think he can still be a good upgrade.
I'm not really sure there is a whole heck of a lot the Texans really could have done for the OL via FA this year. The Faneca development is promising. But we'll just have to wait and hope. At his age he's going to want a lot of money up front, and there will be multiple suitors. This would be Bob's chance to drop some coin this offseason. Let's see if he takes it.
Wow... so much for my money theory... the vet minimum? Holy cow. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5135095 If he's willing to sign for the vet minimum, that means he's going to have his pick of the litter of NFL teams. He's probably going to want to go to a champion. I really, really hope the Texans are on his radar.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hotstories/6975529.html The Texans are interested in guard Alan Faneca, who was released by the New York Jets on Saturday. The 33-year-old Faneca, who played at Lamar Consolidated High School, is a nine-time Pro Bowl player who spent his first 10 years with Pittsburgh and the last two with the Jets. “I think everybody in football's going to be interested in him,” coach Gary Kubiak said today. “We're going to check him out to see what he's interested in doing at this stage of his career, what direction he's headed.” General manager Rick Smith will let Faneca's agent, also named Rick Smith, know the Texans are interested in the veteran who played at LSU and resides in Thibodaux, La. In 2008, Faneca signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Jets that included $21 million guaranteed. At the time, he was the highest-paid offensive lineman in history. Because the Jets still owe Faneca $5.25 million this year, money shouldn't be an issue with his next team. The Texans' starter at left guard is Kasey Studdard. They drafted Shelley Smith in the sixth round and signed veteran free agent Wade Smith in the offseason. They have Mike Brisiel, Antoine Caldwell and Chris White at right guard.
Dang, I forgot how much quantity we have at guard...lots of names there, lol. I really want Caldwell to step up and be the player we were hoping he could be. Faneca at the other guard spot would be nice. And then we'd have some solid depth at the position.
By seasons end I want our starting five OLinemen to be Caldwell, Faneca, Smith, Winston and Brown....
Caldwell can play center right? I think Myers is the biggest weakness in the middle. I would slide Caldwell to center, plug in Faneca at guard and then throw in whoever else at the other guard
Yeah, Myers scared the living crap out of me. After week 1 against the Jets, I think he completely ruined any confidence I can have in him. The damage is irreversible.
Let's just be thankful that Alan isn't named Rick Smith, too. "Rick Smith will contact Rick Smith about acquiring Rick Smith"
Whoever signs Faneca, the Jets will be paying him 5mil for the season, if he wants to come here, he could come cheap; sign him and then offer Darren Sharper a huge one year deal, since the season is uncapped anyway, and we'll be ready to roll into the playoffs and beyond!
Faneca has some experience lining up opposite Jenkins...so just for that game alone, it may be worth signing Faneca.
If Schaub didn't trip him up at the end there, I think Jenkins would have gone into the stands and sacked the entire audience.
