Christianity has been nothing but a hindrance to the advancement of knowledge throughout it's history. From the destruction of the Library at Alexandria to the Scopes monkey trial, Christians have consistently opposed that which did not conform to a church-approved, theologically correct standard. Civilization has advanced in spite of Christianity. Pagans were doing just fine until monotheism reared it's ugly, idol-hating head.
Well gee, why not just turn the world over to computers, I am sure that they would proceed quite logically. That post reminds me of Nietsche (sp?). I would be very sad if the world lived only by purely utilitarian ideals. I guess you are forgetting about all of the Christian schools and universities. Or how about that during the middle ages the Clergy were the only ones that learned to read. That is exactly what I am talking about. Anyone with 2000 years of history is eventually going to do something bad, but that is all that anyone focuses on. Does the burning of the library counteract the beauty of the Sistine Chapel. Does the Scopes trial completely erase Mother Theresa. Uhh, that is because the masses were not given the option. nor did they have the luxury to actually learn. They had this little thing called surviving a horrible standard of living (while opulet gold cathedrals and palaces were being built). Additionally, knowledge tends to do a horrible thing...democratize. Couldn't have that in the totalitarian systems of the time. The Church only educated its own and the aristocracy for some time. I know why they go door to door. I once did too. What I asked was why they keep themselves in the high annoyance category. Going door to door is just one of the ways to accomplish that. My main concern with Christians and these types of things (the videos, going door to door, etc) is the lack of tolerance and patience they show for the beliefs of others. Obviously, not all of them are that way. I have some good friends who are Christians and they NEVER try to convert me. The problem is all those full of the zeal of the newly converted. They disregard the beliefs of others because of their most recent experiences. That is highly annyoing especially when you've spent more than half your life studying faith and belief and suddenly some guy who just got "saved" two weeks ago tries to enlighten you on why you are going to hell. Maybe I just wish Christians would pick better representatives! By the way, the world is what it is. There is no sense in blaming Christianity or, for that matter, holding any religion up to be something that, historically, it isn't. Religion has enriched and destroyed many lives.
